The Beauregard Canal (or Slave Canal)

A hike along a very easy path, following an old irrigation canal. It allows you to discover the lush tropical vegetation and offers beautiful views of the Pitons du Carbet massif.

The elevation gain shown is greatly overestimated: it is only a few dozen metres at most.

(Please note): access has been reported as prohibited since March 2022, to be confirmed in November 2022. Please check before setting out.

Description of the walk

Departure from Le Bout du Canal, north-east of the village of Carbet. From the village, just north of the Carbet River, follow the D62 eastwards. After passing through the "Berlin" housing estate, turn right towards Bout Bois. Make a sharp right turn and continue eastwards. At a sharp left turn, park in a small car park at the side of the road (signpost for the start of the hike).

(S/E) Head south-east and follow the low wall of the canal. Walk along the canal on your left, taking care to avoid the spikes on your right. From time to time, cross a stream coming from the left from Morne Charlerie.

(1) Continue along the canal. Near Maison Rouge, leave the canal by turning left and climbing slightly to reach a road near the buildings.

(2) Return along the same path in the opposite direction to the place known as Le Bout du Canal (S/E).

Waypoints

  1. S/E : km 0 - alt. 174 m - The End of the Canal
  2. 1 : km 2.2 - alt. 177 m - Limit of Carbet and Fonds-Saint-Denis
  3. 2 : km 3.22 - alt. 187 m - Maison Rouge
  4. S/E : km 6.43 - alt. 174 m - The End of the Canal

Notes

Wear good trainers or hiking boots.

Bar at Maison Rouge (2).

Even though the route is particularly straightforward here, a detailed map is always useful (at least the one accompanying this description).

Warnings:
- Only undertake this hike in dry weather. In wet weather, the stones of the low wall can be very slippery.
- The canal wall is often narrow! If you are in a group, walk in single file. If you encounter hikers coming in the opposite direction, take the time to organise the crossing between the two lines.
- There are some steep sections: this hike may not be suitable for people who are prone to vertigo, and I do not recommend it for young children.
- Find out about the trigonocéphale snake.

Worth a visit

The Beauregard Canal was built between the late 18th and early 19th centuries to irrigate the naturally dry lands of the Caribbean coast with water from the forest. Many slaves were enlisted for this work, hence the name Canal des Esclaves (Slave Canal) also given to this canal.

Along the way:
- Pleasant walk along the canal.
- Lush tropical vegetation. Opportunities to observe wildlife, particularly land crabs.
- Views of the Pitons du Carbet mountain range.

A superb, enjoyable walk with stunning scenery. The low wall along which
we walk is narrow; there are two or three places where you mustn’t fall. Luckily, that’s exactly where you’ll be focusing your attention! A real treat

Hike completed today, 15/05/2025.
The ban is still in place, but you can get through. I asked some locals, who confirmed this as well.
As mentioned by other users:
- It's more of a walk than a hike: no difficulty related to elevation, it's flat the whole way!
- There's no way to get lost, there's really only one trail.
- Not suitable for people who are afraid of heights. Some sections can be quite daunting due to the drop.
- Not suitable for young children!
- Check the weather forecast before you go.
I did it today and it's been raining heavily for a week.
The canal is therefore full to the brim (and that's not just an expression).
In some places, the water flows over the low wall, but I had no trouble getting through, as the wall is not slippery.
- I would add the option of continuing a little further than the route described, about 3-400 metres. Still along the canal, you will come across the source of the water. It's always nice to reach the end without adding hours of walking.

Hike possible despite closure; shaded trail.
Must be done with caution, not recommended if it is raining or has rained as it can be slippery with the drop on either side, also not recommended for children.

We wanted to do this route five years ago, but when we arrived, there was a sign saying it was closed. Five years later, the same sign was still there, but we had heard from people who had done it very recently, so we decided to tackle this hike, which is often described in guidebooks. We started at the top on the advice of others, but as it's a round trip, it doesn't really matter, except that the drive up is challenging, with steep gradients that can be difficult on the way back with a small engine.
A good part of the hike is done walking on the canal wall. It is a comfortable width and presents no difficulty except for people who are prone to vertigo. The views of the vegetation and the Caribbean Sea are splendid. The route is very shady overall.
We encountered few other hikers. In some places, the water overflows the wall, and the few sandbags placed on top are not enough to prevent your shoes from getting wet. Repairs have been made here and there, but there is still work to be done to restore it completely.
The estimated times are accurate, as you need to watch your step and take the time to admire the landscape.
Enjoy your hike!

Hello,
I did this hike yesterday (2/11/2023).
It was a lovely walk.
The barrier is still there, but there's no problem getting past it.
Some sections are definitely not suitable for children, especially during the rainy season.
I didn't regret wearing my Crocs, even though they're not ideal for hiking... Your feet get pretty wet, at least during this season.
Enjoy your walk and be careful!

An unusual and exceptional hike offering panoramic views along the canal. We set off from Carbet. Although there is a fence restricting access, there is a passageway that allows you to get through easily and start the route. Given the prohibition, you might expect some sections to be inaccessible, but this is not the case.
We do not regret having done this route. Be careful if you are prone to vertigo, as some sections can be quite impressive.
A must-do

Hello DomRheme, and thank you for your feedback.

Since March 2022, the closure of the trail has been mentioned on the hike information sheet, in bold in the introduction...

The Beauregard Canal is CLOSED and access is prohibited.
We went to the western entrance, where the fencing around the route is already overgrown with vegetation. There is no sign of any work being done on this side.
We went to check the other side via Fonds-St-Denis: the closure is in effect from Maison Rousse onwards. The restaurant there is also closed until further notice...
After checking, we found that the 2022 brochure for hiking in Martinique no longer mentions the Beauregard Canal.

Hello again François,

Hmm... If there's a sign saying that access is prohibited, I'll probably mention it on the hike page. You say that you were able to get through anyway, and Visorando isn't responsible for any kind of road policing. However, I do need to mention this prohibition, in the hope that it's only temporary.

There is indeed a sign prohibiting access, but you can slip behind it to get through. There are no difficulties along the route. In some places, the canal has subsided a little over a few metres and the water overflows, but you can get through without any problems.
