Start : Parking at Green Well of Scotland, just before Carsphairn. Room for parking on both sides of the road, immediately after the bridge. Grid ref. NX 557 944
(S/E) From the A713, head up into the steading, passing the small cottage just off the road and through the gate. Follow the road past the old barn, across the burn and up into the hill. This will soon be planted with trees. (A) Carry on following the road.
(1) After passing through the 3rd gate, turn right (East) and head away from the road uphill, aiming for the high point. There is no path here, but not hard going.
(2) Once at the summit, head for the fence where you will pickup the trail. Turn left, keeping the fence on your right and follow the trail. First summit is Willieanna, then Dunool and then Black Shoulder. The descent and ascent between each summit is steep in places, but the views this way are much more rewarding.
(3) After Black Shoulder you should see a trail heading off around 11 o’clock position North,(don’t worry if you miss this), follow and this will take you direct to the summit, Large cairn, shelter and trig point.
If you cant see a trail, continue to follow the fence to where it turns a right angle. From here head off roughly towards the 10 O’clock position, heading uphill all the way. Eventually Large cairn will be visible.
(4) The drystone dyke which starts at the trig point can be followed all the way back down.
(5) Cross the bridge over the burn, follow the dyke where it turns right and onto the the road which can be followed back to the start. (S/E)
