Description of the walk

Start: Croft Terrace, Braithwaite, Keswick (CA12 5TJ) Grid ref. NY 232 236

(S/E) Starting from Croft Terrace street, take the footpath on the left hand side (before the road bends) following Coledale beck and then Barrow Gill. The campsite should be on your left hand side. You will then enter a field where you will cross Barrow Gill and have Newlands beck on your left hand side. Continue straight on this footpath until reaching a farm. Cross the farm ground to arrive on a road.

(1) Take left on the road, pass the bridge and directly after the bridge turn right on the footpath that follows Newlands Beck. Keep straight following the river until reaching the end of the footpath and a road.

(2) Take right on the road (South-West) and continue straight until reaching an intersection. Take right to pass the bridge and cross Newlands Beck. Then follow the bend of the road and keep straight on the road passing through Stair village. Stay on this road until the intersection with Newlands Hause at Ellas Crag house level.

(3) Take left on Newlands Hause road and stay on the road until seeing a smaller road on your left hand side going to Rowling End and The Mouse House. Turn left to take that road East and before reaching the house turn left again on the footpath going towards Newlands Beck. Cross the river and keep straight until reaching a road.

(4) At the road, turn left, then after a couple of meters right on the footpath. Continue on this footpath until reaching a road. Turn right, then left to take the footpath on your right hand side (East) going towards the bottom of Cat Bells summit. Continue on that footpath until reaching the main path going up Cat Bells summit.

(5) Turn left to go down the path (leaving the path going up Cat Bells on your right hand side). Keep going down until reaching the road. At the road, turn right and stay on the main road (leaving the smaller road on your right). After a couple of meters, the road will bend and you will have to take the footpath at the bend level (North-East). Keep straight on the footpath (leaving the footpath on the right). Keep straight until reaching an intersection of roads and paths.

(6) Go straight on the footpath (North) following the Cumbria Way. Keep straight on the Cumbria Way until reaching the road.

(7) Take right on the road (North), continue straight, the road will bend. After the bend turn left to take the footpath (there is a gate and it looks like a private road but you can actually enter on foot). Continue on this private road with beautiful houses on both side until seeing a footpath on the left hand side.

(8) Turn left and stay on this footpath until reaching a road. At the road, turn right (West), and stay on that road until reaching an intersection. Turn right and stay on that road until reaching the bridge crossing Newlands Beck.

(1) After the bridge turn right at the farm and retrace your steps to walk towards Braithwaite village and the carpark (S/E)
