Description of the walk

Park in the car park of the cooperative winery.

(S/E) Head north towards Sauzet along the path that runs alongside the railway line. Reach the crossroads by the chicken coops and greenhouses.

(1) Turn right, then take thesecond path on the right, then turn left between two rows of vines. You’ll reach the junction with the N106, the dual carriageway from Alès to Nîmes.
.
(2) Please note: the two routes split here:
- for the 4 km route: follow the dual carriageway as far as Pont Caladat,
- for the 8 km route (the main route): go under the N106, continue straight on until you reach the mechanic’s house. Then turn right and follow the fence. You will reach a field.

(3) Turn left into an uncultivated meadow, cross the D936. Continue to the old Bas Rhône pumping station. Go round the pond. Carry on to the Sauzet dam to enjoy the view of the Gardon.

(4) Go round the Loron bull ranch. Cross the D936 again and head to the junction with a dirt track.

(5) Turn right onto it. Pass in front of the old Sauzet pumping station. Turn left, go under the dual carriageway, to reach the junction of the two routes at the Caladat Bridge.

(6) Head back up towards Sauzet, taking a path on the left through the vineyards until you reach a four-way junction.

(7) Take the path on the left; at the following Y-junctions, keep right to return to the car park of the cooperative winery (S/E).

A lovely, varied walk with no difficult sections. Best done in mid-season when there’s no shade. A very pleasant walk that I really enjoyed. Take a detour before crossing the N106, as it’s no longer possible to cross the field mentioned; you need to carry on and turn right a little further on. Please note that the dam on the Gardon is under construction. A turbine is being built. Taking the dog for a swim is a bit trickier, but it’s still just as lovely.

Hello
Yesterday, 12 December 2020, we tried to do this walk
near Mas de Pantel, but couldn’t find the path branching off to the right towards Pont Plat; we didn’t see any signposts
Can anyone add any clues?

It’s a shame that the noise from the Ales–Nîmes road is ever-present during this walk. But as soon as you reach the Gardon, it’s really lovely.

There’s a lot of walking along roads.
The stretch across open fields, roughly halfway along the route, can easily be avoided by continuing for about a hundred metres and then turning left onto a path. Once you’ve crossed the main road, you can continue straight ahead onto a dirt track.

:Please note: just after the wheat field, head back up towards the N 106, passing in front of Le Murier, then turn right. There’s a crossing over the stream; in a month’s time it will be barely visible, but with this route there’s no problem.
Enjoy your walk
