Route in Gardonnenque in Saint-Mamert-du-Gard

This walk allows you to discover part of the Gardonnenque region located north-west of Nîmes.
Between vineyards and heath, you will pass through four villages: Saint-Mamert, Parignargues, Gajan and Fons. On the hilltops, on a clear day, at the Saint-Mamert mill, you can enjoy a 180° panorama from Pic Saint-Loup to Mont Bouquet, via Mont Aigual and Mont Lozère. In the foreground is the Bois des Leins massif.

Description of the walk

Depart from the car park at the wash house, at the entrance to Saint-Mamert, on the cemetery side.

(S/E) When you leave the car park, take the path on the right that runs alongside the stream for 100 metres. Cross the stream via the concrete ford and follow Chemin du Rieu to the end. When you reach Rue de Carrière Crose, turn left until you reach the hairpin bend, where you leave the road and follow the small path on the right that passes between two advertising hoardings. Follow the D22 for 400 m, towards Montpezat.

(1) Cross the D22 with caution due to heavy and fast-moving traffic. Follow the path towards the Montagnon stables until you reach the "Verune" signpost.

(2) Turn left towards Parignargues. At the first houses, keep left towards the centre of the village and continue to the "Chemin des Aires" signpost.

(3) Follow the street on the left that runs along the stone wall of a large property until you reach the "Temple" signpost located on the edge of the D1 (Route de Nîmes). Turn left, pass in front of the town hall, leaving the fountain on your right. Immediately afterwards, take Rue des Moulins à Vent opposite you, towards Gajan. Pass in front of the water tower and you will come to a three-way junction.

(4) Continue straight ahead on the DFCI B78. Stay on this wide track until you reach the "Montmal 4.6 km" signpost.

(5) Turn right towards Gajan via the DFCI B142. Continue straight on until you reach the village via Chemin de Gajanet.

(6) At the entrance to the village, when you reach the "Gajan-Gajanet" signpost, turn left and follow the main street (Avenue du Griffe). Pass the town hall and then the wine cooperative, veering to the left. Cross the small submersible bridge (signpost "Gajan" and car park), then immediately take thePR®/GR® on your left. Join the D22.

(7) Cross the road, follow thePR® opposite towards Fons until you reach the "Camp de Poulet" signpost. Continue straight on along Rue du Puits de la Rue and then Rue du Prieur until you reach the D1.

(8) Cross the road carefully and head opposite towards "Moulezan - Robiac - Les Jasses". Continue to the signpost marked "Les Jasses" and turn left towards Saint-Mamert-Les Tinelles. Walk for about 1.6 km until you reach a crossroads.

(9) Take the road on the left for about 150 m, then take the path on the right, crossing the ford. Follow this path until you reach the signpost for "Les Tinelles" and turn left towards Saint-Mamert.

(10) Cross the Tinelles ford and enter the village. At the "Pont de Jules" signpost, turn left towards Route de Nîmes via Rue de la Mazade until you reach the square where the post office and war memorial are located. Turn right onto the main street and follow it to the car park (S/E).

Notes

This hike is not recommended in hot weather or after heavy rain, as many of the fords will be submerged.
In spring, there is a wealth of typical Mediterranean flora: thyme, rosemary, rockroses, Montpellier aphyllanthus, etc.
Apart from the distance of 12 km, there are no particular difficulties, with little elevation gain and wide, well-maintained paths.
All shops in Saint-Mamert du Gard: bakery, grocery store, bar, tobacconist and newsagent.

(5) Once you reach the Montmal marker, you can make a short return trip to the Moulin de Montmal: 180° view of the village, the Leins woods, Pic Saint-Loup, Aigoual, Mont Lozère and Mont Bouquet.

Worth a visit

Each village you pass through has its own charm to discover, with 12th-century churches, wash houses and restored old town centres.

On a clear day, there are beautiful views of the Cévennes, the Gardon plain and the Leins woods when you are on the DFCI firebreaks on the ridge.

For hikers passing through the region, Roman Nîmes is 2 minutes away, the Duchy of Uzès is 30 minutes away, the medieval town of Sommières is 20 minutes away, the sea is an hour away and Mont Aigoual, the highest peak in the Gard (1,600 m) with many magnificent hikes, is 1½ hours away.

A very nice route, but don't do it in summer because it's too crowded and, above all, very hot.

A fairly easy hike with no technical difficulties. Personally, I find that we are too often on busy roads, but then again, passing through four picturesque villages adds to the charm.

An easy, pleasant walk, especially in winter when the sun is shining.
What's more, if you do it during the festive season, you can admire the animated nativity scene in Parignargues at the church near the car park by the wash house.

It was Saturday, unfortunately, on our hunters' route, so we took a parallel route. There were still hunters there.

I am very satisfied with the descriptions of the Viso rando hikes.
I have tried out many of them in my region.
Thank you very much.
