Long circular from Lac de la Balerme starting from Verfeil

A pleasant hike, partly shaded. This hike will take us to the cemetery of the Petites Filles Modèles and around Lake Balerme, where we can have a picnic, weather permitting.

Description of the walk

Park in the En Solomiac cultural centre car park. The car park is currently being used by bungalows for school purposes, pending the renovation of the Verfeil nursery school. However, there are still a few spaces available.

(S/E) Start the walk by heading towards the children's playground (slide) and turn opposite, following the Flèche Verte sign. After a short, slightly steep descent, the path approaches the Rieubaquié stream and arrives at a crossroads with a transverse path.

(1) Leave this cross path (return path), continue straight ahead and follow the Rieubaquié stream to Rue de La Fontaine Baptisée. Please note that some sections may be muddy in wet weather.

(2) At the intersection with Rue de la Fontaine Baptisée, turn right and then immediately left onto Chemin de Gaillaguet (towards "En Dayde II"). At the end of the tarmac road, continue along the shaded path that climbs towards the Cimetière des Petites Filles Modèles.
Go around the Domaine de Gaillaguet on the left and continue climbing until you reach the crossroads at a place called En Jeambert.

(3) Continue straight ahead and join the D 20G.

(4) Once you reach the D 20G, turn left to go to the Cimetière des Petites Filles Modèles.
For more information on the history of the Comtesse de Ségur and her granddaughters, Camille and Madeleine de Malaret, see Practical Information.

(5) After your visit, retrace your steps and return to the previous crossroads.

(4) Keep left and continue along the road for about 300 metres until you reach Chemin d'En Bousquet.

(6) Take the Chemin d'En Bousquet on the left, which descends towards Lac de la Balerme.

(7) When you reach the lake, turn left to walk around it. Be careful, as some sections can be muddy in wet weather. Once you reach the dam, cross it and turn right at the end. Continue around the lake for 300 m until you reach Chemin de Laraignal.

(8) Turn left onto Chemin de Laraignal, which climbs towards Château de Malaret (not shown on the IGN map).
Be careful, just before you reach Laraignal, there is an unsafe well on the right. 200 m after the well, turn right and take the gravel path. Pass under the high-voltage power line and continue right on Chemin de Laraignal.
Back on the D 20G, follow it to the left. There is a beautiful view of Verfeil, and you can see Château de Malaret on the left. You will then arrive at the crossroads in En Garric.

(9) At En Garric, leave the D 20G and turn right onto path No. 5, which descends towards Verfeil. Follow it for 500 m and you will find a path on the left at the edge of the fields.

(10) Take this path on your left, heading south-west, for about 500 metres until you reach a dirt track. Turn right towards the place called "En Bax". Do not go all the way to the place; after about 100 metres, turn left. You will come to a road at the place called "Le Moulin Neuf".

(11) Cross the road and continue straight ahead until you reach the bend. Leave this path and continue straight ahead on the path that descends. At the first junction, after 200 metres, take another path on the right. At the next junction, after 500 metres, turn left until you reach the place called "En Caravelles" where the path joins the bend in a small road.

(12) Turn left onto the road for a few dozen metres and, after the right-hand bend, turn immediately right onto a dirt track. Follow this track northwards to the Rieubaquié stream. Cross it, taking care as this section can be muddy in wet weather. Immediately afterwards, you will reach the junction you came to after setting off.

(1) Continue straight ahead on the "d'En Rispet" path to climb towards Verfeil. When you reach the main road, turn left and follow the road downhill to the wide right-hand bend. Be careful, as there may be heavy traffic. Stay on the left-hand pavement. In the middle of the bend, turn left and head for the car park of the En Solomiac cultural centre (S/E).

Notes

Variations:
(3) You can shorten the hike by taking the En Jeambert path, which descends to the right and joins the (10).

(1) On the way back, to avoid a final climb and the section of road that follows, you can return to the car park by taking the same path on the left as at the start.

(5) Camille and Madeleine de Malaret, the famous "Petites filles modèles" (Model Little Girls) of the Comtesse de Ségur, are buried at the foot of the Church of Saint-Sernin-des-Rais. See Wikipedia.

A very pleasant circular route from Verfeil to Lake Balerme along perfectly maintained grassy paths (mowing in progress this Sunday), accompanied by memories of the Countess of Ségur (information panels, church and cemetery of her descendants)

Please note that there is construction work on the Balerme Lake embankment. The area is dangerous due to heavy machinery

This route starts north of the old town of Verfeil (PR Jean Jaurès), which is very charming and well worth a visit. The cemetery of the "petites filles modèles" (model girls) is worth a detour and the lake shores are quite pleasant, although there is little shade (best avoided in the height of summer when it is very hot). There are some beautiful rolling hills, heralding the Lauragais region.

For those who find the route a little long, note that it can be shortened, as we did today, by continuing from point 10 to point 2 (north-west) and returning to Verfeil via the street with the named fountain (worth seeing).

A pleasant hike under the March sun. Lovely view of the snow-capped Pyrenees. Birdsong accompanied us throughout the walk. Some muddy, even very muddy, sections due to the rain in previous days. Be sure to go around the lake on the left. Very pleasant picnic by the lake. No difficulties to report.

Unclear description of the starting point. Specify that the starting point is at the information panel about the life of the Comtesse de Ségur and her granddaughters, located at the edge of the car park. The "green arrow" mentioned in the description is located 300 metres further on, under the trees, and cannot be seen from the car park.

Easy walk
very dry paths and exceptional weather for the season
Interesting, but the lake was at its lowest level, which affected the scenery
Downside: despite having a map, we were constantly searching for the path, and we weren't the only ones. We even missed one of the last turns
It's a shame there are no signposts and we didn't have a smartphone with GPS.
Good memories nonetheless.

The route was only busy around the lake. The rest was very quiet.
Thank you for this beautiful walk in the countryside, yet so close to Toulouse.

No mud today, but after the rain, you need to wear good footwear as there are likely to be lots of deep puddles.

There are trees but not much shade. It's best to bear this in mind in the height of summer!

Overall: a great day. We're keeping this walk in our list of favourites.
