Description of the walk

At Rouillat Bas, leave your vehicle in the car park next to the church.

No signposts

(S/E) Take the one-way Zone 30 road that runs alongside the cemetery on your left. Ignore the no-entry street on your right, arrive at a T-junction and follow the road to the right. You will see a double tower in a garden on the left-hand side of the road.

(1) About 80 m after these towers, turn right onto Chemin des Suzots. The tarmac soon disappears. Ignore a path (not listed by the IGN) on the right at a mountain bike signpost in the opposite direction. When you reach a meadow, ignore a path on the right. After a short descent, past an LPO refuge, you will come to a T-junction with a path.

(2) Turn right and continue to a crossroads with several paths at the Croix Saint-Jacques signpost. Follow the path to the right towards Ponteix. Further on, ignore a path on the left.

Yellow markings

Just before the first house in Ponteix, turn left onto a path marked with a yellowPR®® sign. Further on, leave the path, which continues straight ahead (not listed by the IGN), and turn right onto a street and follow it. Further on, it turns left and ends at a car park, at a stele and the Ponteix signpost.

No signposts

(3) Ignore the directions indicated by the signpost, cross the D213 carefully to reach the church and its fountain-calvary, then follow the road to the right for about 50 metres. Ignore Chemin de Chazal and, immediately after, turn left at the traffic lights onto Chemin du Mas. Further on, at the end of the tarmac road, ignore a path on the right and continue with a stream on your right. The path crosses the stream and then moves away from it. Ignore a path on the left, then one on the right and another on the left.

(4) When you reach a meadow, ignore the path that branches off to the left. Shortly afterwards, enter a beautiful woodland and follow a path (unfortunately damaged by motorised vehicles) that climbs quite steeply. Ignore the side paths and continue to follow the steepest slope. When you reach a plateau, continue along the well-marked path, which makes a wide turn to the right. Further on, ignore a cairned path on the left, then arrive at a T-junction with another grassy path. Follow it to the left and you will come to a road.

(5) Follow it to the left and keep going until you reach the village of Cournol, ignoring a road on the right. At the entrance to the village, take the second street on the right, Rue du Gouléjon, turn left at the next T-junction, take the second street on the right, Rue du Four. Keep to the right to go past the church, then stay on the right to reach Place de l'Église, go down the steps on the right and you will come to a road.

(6) Follow it to the right and leave the village of Cournol. Further on, pass a drinking trough and a beautiful wash house (under renovation in winter 2023) on your right. Turn onto the first road on the right, which further on loses its tarmac surface.

(7) At the T-junction with a path, turn right. About 300 m further on, in the bend in the path on the right, look for aGR®® sign on a rock.

Red and whiteGR®® markings

Leave the path and follow the trail that branches off to the left, just to the right of the marker. Shortly afterwards, ignore the trail that continues straight ahead, turn left and you will immediately come to another trail, which you should follow to the left. Climb up a few switchbacks towards the hamlet of Le Mas and you will come to a fork in the road.

No markings

Leave theGR®® markings and follow the path on the right towards a large cross. You will arrive at a street in Le Mas and continue straight ahead. At the fork in the road, keep left and you will arrive at Place de la Liberté. Leave the two streets on your left, keep right as you leave the square, turn left onto the street, then left again at the bus shelter to arrive at Place des Puits, and pass to the left of the two wells in question.

Red and whiteGR®® markings

(8) After the second well, find theGR®® markings and follow them by taking the path on the right, to the left of a house. Further on, you will arrive at a road.

(9) Cross it and continue straight ahead. At the T-junction with a path, follow it to the left and, at the next T-junction, turn right. At the first fork in the path, keep left, then at the second fork, at the 949 m marker, stay on the path furthest to the right, towards Phialeix. Ignore a path on the right, arrive at a four-way crossroads and turn right.

No signposts

(10) About 100 m further on, leave theGR®® which branches off to the left and follow the path that continues straight ahead. Ignore a path on the right (at a sign for Piste Yves de Calvez), then another on the left. Much further on, in a right-hand bend, ignore a path on the left (not listed by the IGN) then, about 150 m further on, you will come to a T-junction with a wide path.

(11) Follow it to the left.

Mountain bike trail no. 6

At a bend in the path to the right, follow the path straight ahead marked MTB no. 6. You will come to a road; follow it to the left towards the hamlet of Lot. Note the path that branches off to the right about 50 metres further on, but continue a little further along the road until you reach the bridge over the Veyre (wash house and public area on the other side of the road, with what may be the leats of old mills).

(12) Turn back and follow the path, now on the left, towards a cross, a bench and, above all, a beautiful oak tree whose trunk is embedded in a rock.

Continue along the path to the left of the cross, which further on runs alongside the Veyre on the left. Cross a bridge and then join a street in Rouillat Bas.

No markings

Follow it and turn onto the first street on the right, Chemin de la Croix du Tout. Leave this small cross and a street on the right, join a wider street and follow it to the right, on the pavement. Cross the roundabout at the pedestrian crossing and continue opposite, on the pedestrian path running alongside the street, to return to the church (S/E).

Unobstructed views on many parts of the route. A few passages along the Veyre. You will notice that it is no longer in the same places as on the IGN map, as it has undergone a meandering programme.
