Park in the car park on the side of the D2089 at the exit towards La Cassière, Aydat.
(S/E) With your back to the road, head west on the GR®4-30-441 (red and white markings). Ignore the path on the right.
(1) At the crossroads, turn left onto an unmarked path, leaving the GR®. Continue for about 600 m, then pay attention ( the Visorando app is useful).
(2) Don't miss the path that branches off to the right for a hairpin bend (the path that continues straight ahead is marked brown for mountain bikes). Shortly afterwards, you will come to a crossroads. Take the left-hand path, then almost immediately ignore a small path branching off to the left. Continue straight ahead on this beautiful forest path, ignoring the few old logging tracks. Further on, the path approaches the D2029, and you can hear it!
(3) Ignore a path on the left that joins the departmental road. Continue straight ahead. Further on, the trail also meets the busy road. For safety reasons, the trails in this area have all been re-routed to cross the D2089 as safely as possible. So, even if it's not the most pleasant part of the route, after ignoring a path that climbs to the right (towards Puy de Vichatel), continue on the path that runs alongside the road to the pedestrian crossing.
(4) Cross the road very carefully (a tunnel would have been more appropriate) and descend on the other side into the Aire du Col de la Ventouse (car park). Head towards the back and left of the car park (south-east corner) to find a path that descends to the left. Follow it to an intersection with a path, at the directional signs.
(5) Continue straight ahead towards "Saulzet-le-Froid". At the fork in the path, keep to the right, following the mountain bike signs. Join the road (D213) and immediately turn right onto Chemin de Charmont (wooden sign).
(6) At the T-junction with a wide path, turn left and follow the GR® signs until further notice. You will arrive at the junction with the D213, a busy road. Cross it with great care and continue along the path opposite. Ignore all the paths leading off to the right and left until you reach the edge of the forest.
(7) Here, the route takes a detour to see, more closely, a group of standing stones that we can see on the right in a field. These rocks look very much like menhirs (and indeed they are, since "menhir" simply means "long stone" in Breton) but are not listed on the IGN map as such (i.e. as a megalithic monument). Then retrace your steps to find the GR®.
(7) Continue to the right, entering the forest covering the chaotic terrain of the Cheire d'Aydat (solidified lava flow from the Puy de la Vache). When you leave the forest, you will come to an agricultural storage area.
(8) Leave the GR® and follow the first path on the right. Ignore one path.
(9) Ignore a second path on the left and start following the blue markings. Further on, ignore a path on the right, then pay attention to the blue markings, which are rare on this poorly marked trail in the woods (the Visorando app is useful). At one point in particular, when the trail seems to disappear, climb up to the left to find a path that descends to the shore of Lac de la Cassière. At several points, you can leave the trail to get closer to the lake and then return. The trail (still marked in blue) passes by a small car park.
(10) Follow the path that leads away from the lake towards the south until you reach an intersection with another path. Take the path on the left and you will soon reach a road (D90).
(11) Follow this quiet road to the left to continue along the lake. At several points, you can reach the shore to observe the flora and fauna or take a break.
(12) At the fork in the road, take the left fork, then the first right, Rue du Four. At the intersection, take the street on the left and continue left in front of the old Cassière tunnel. Immediately after, follow the first path on the right that passes under the D2089 and, on the other side, keep right to return to the car park (S/E).
