Loop via Tauzuc from Saint-Pierreville

A beautiful hike in the Ardèche, sometimes along ridges and sometimes under chestnut trees. The hamlets of Tauzuc and Serre de Tauzuc are worth seeing... Especially when a deer appears and then disappears, as shy as ever.

Description of the walk

The car park in the centre of Saint-Pierreville, just after the town hall, is ideal. Toilets are also available. At major crossroads, the direction to Saint-Pierreville is clearly signposted. For directions to Tauzuc, look out for old, small signs with almost illegible writing... keep an eye out! Note that there are some useful explanations about the spinning mills of yesteryear and the Route des Dragonnades.

White and yellow signposts

(S/E) The trail starts on a small path, paved for the first few metres, which descends to the right of the bakery. At the bottom, you will find a small bridge near an old, well-restored spinning mill, which has been there for a long time.

(1) After crossing this small bridge over the Veyruègne and leaving the old spinning mill on your right, the crossroads on the left offers the return route: for now, head right. Continue to the junction with the D8, turn left for a few metres, then turn right onto the uphill path. Pass a few houses and you will come to a fork.

(3) Turn right and begin a steady climb up the Route des Dragonnades, following a series of hairpin bends.

(4) Keep left at the three-way junction and continue to a crossroads.

(5) On the left, follow the small, barely legible sign for Tauzuc. A path on the ridge opens up the landscape, but unfortunately a fire in 2024 ravaged a large area. Vegetation is just beginning to cover the ground again. Reach the centre of the hamlet of Tauzuc.

(6) Turn left towards Serre de Tauzuc, quickly leave the D211 on your right and continue for about 200 m.

(7) Leave the road and follow the path on the left, which quickly widens and then curves to the right, returning to the road you left earlier. Continue left to reach Serre de Tauzuc.

(8) Turn left again, following the D8, then leave the road and follow a path on the left that winds through meadows and then under chestnut trees. Return to the D8.

(9) Turn right and follow the road for a few hundred metres until you reach a junction with a path on the left with a "no vehicles" sign.

(10) Turn left.

(11) Just before reaching the Ruisseau des Courbes, take the path on the left, which is very pleasant and easy to walk on. Two fords and a few ups and downs under the chestnut trees will take you back to the path you started on.

(2) Retrace your steps in the opposite direction, where the climb is beautiful along flower-filled gardens and lovely vegetable patches. Return to the car park (S/E).
