Circular via Saint-Martin and Roquefixade from Nalzen

A circular loop, mainly on footpaths and a little bit of a very quiet road. Beautiful views of the castles of Roquefixade and Montségur in the distance, as well as the mountains of the Tabe massif.

Description of the walk

From Nalzen, take the D117a road to Saint Martin. You can park in the bend or along the road as it climbs.

(S/E) Take the D117a road for 200 metres, which climbs towards Saint-Martin.

(1) Leave the road and take the path on the right that climbs northwards. Pass under the power line. At the hamlet of Le Casalis, turn left onto the road and continue for about 100 metres.

(2) Leave the road and take the path on the right until you reach a road on the left, which you follow for 50 metres.

(3) Leave the road and turn left onto the path that descends southwards. Cross the small cemetery and rejoin the road.

(4) Turn right onto the road and head north. At the right-angle bend, leave the road and follow the path opposite, then immediately turn left towards the west.

(5) When you reach a path, turn right, heading north. You will come to a small road; follow it to the right. Cross the hamlet of Cazals de Dessous, then Cazals de Dessus, turning left.

(6) Take the path on the right that goes uphill. Cross the D9a road carefully and take the path that goes up to the north-west. You will come to a fork.

(7) Turn right, heading east.

(8) At the crossroads, continue straight ahead, heading south-east, to reach the village of Roquefixade.

(9) Take the path on the left that goes around the village, then turn right to cross the village, passing through the main square.

(10) Cross the D9a road carefully and head south until you reach a fork in the road that you passed on the way there.

(3) Cross the road (Chemin de Saint-Martin). Walk along the right-hand side of the cemetery and you will come to another fork in the road, which you also passed on the way there.

(4) Turn left onto the road that crosses Saint-Martin.

(11) In the village, turn right onto a street that continues as a path, heading south.

(12) Take the path on the left to join the D117A. Turn left onto this road and continue to the car park (S/E).
