Panoramic looping route through the Bois des Abrigeaux

Not far from Vaison-La-Romaine, the upper reaches of the village of Buisson offer a balcony route for most of this itinerary. On minor roads, forest tracks and paths, between vineyards and undergrowth, walkers can admire the Aygues valley, the Lance mountain and those of the Baronnies provençales, the distinctive skyline drawn by Mont Ventoux, the Saint Amand ridge and the Dentelles de Montmirail, while in the foreground, crops and hedges offer a lush bocage landscape.

Description of the walk

From the D20 towards Vaison-La-Romaine, turn left into the village of Buisson via Rue du lavoir. Park in the large car park, Parking de la Tour de Guet. There are toilets, picnic tables and a petanque area.

(S/E) From the car park, take Rue de La Parant. At the end, turn left into Grande Rue, then right onto Chemin de Fontvieille.

(1) At the "Buisson 203 m" signpost, turn right towards Notre-Dame Basse on the Chemin d'Argelier (a small tarmac road with little traffic). Continue along this path until you reach the "Notre-Dame Basse" sign (235 m) and continue straight on towards Villedieu.

(2) At the Notre-Dame d'Argelier sign, leave the road to follow a track to the left and make a diversion via the chapel. After going back and forth to the chapel, continue along the track that leads south to the small tarmac road. Cross the road and take the grassy path opposite. This path will enter undergrowth, then join the Chemin du Petit Péreyrol. Turn right onto this small tarmac road, then immediately right again.

(3) Turn right at the fork. Follow the path as it bends to the left. Ignore the right-hand bend. You will come to the D20. Beware! Heavy traffic! It is therefore essential to go down under this road, to the right, at the edge of a vineyard, to follow it safely below. Continue carefully for a few metres along the right-hand edge of the D20, which is now wider, until you reach the path that starts opposite the sign for a picnic area 600 m away. Cross over very carefully and quickly.

(4) Climb this track. At the hairpin bend, head up the steep slope.

(5) At the signpost "Les Abrigeaux nord 313 m", turn left towards "Le Rabet" and the picnic area. The picnic area, equipped with tables and benches, is a few metres further on the right, at the "Forêt communale de Buisson" sign. Follow the same path to the next signpost.

(6) At the signpost "Le Rabet 322 m", follow the signs for "Roaix". You will soon come to an opening in the vegetation offering a superb panoramic view of the Dentelles de Montmirail and Mont Ventoux. There is a "Chemin des Chapelles" sign to help you read the landscape.

(7) At the crossroads, head down the path marked "Grande Traversée du Vaucluse". Follow the yellow markings until you come to a small, passable road.

(8) Turn right in a hairpin bend to climb the track (Yellow Cross). This path will take you around several bends (there is a ball-trap under the second bend) before offering a panoramic view to the south, as far as the Alpilles.

(9) At the fork, take the path that climbs steeply to the right to go around a vineyard. Ignore a farm track on the left (not visible on the map) and continue to climb above the vines until you reach a forest track. Turn left onto this track, then right onto the next (grassy) track.

(10) At the T-junction with a track, turn left. You will come to a wide junction of forest tracks where there is a hut with tables and benches provided by the Rasteau council. Take the track to the right and then, at the fork in the road, follow the stony, steeply sloping path through the undergrowth to the right (yellow markings).

(11) At the "Combe des Amoureux 285 m" signpost, follow the signs for "Buisson" and the yellow and white GRP® Tour du Massif de Rasteau signposts.

(12) At the signpost "Le Jardijon 274 m", turn right towards "Cimetière de Buisson". At the fork in the road, follow the yellow and red signs down to the left onto the small tarmac road "Chemin du Jardijon". At the T-junction, turn right as far as the signpost "Cimetière de Buisson 208 m".

(13) Reach the D20. Beware! Heavy traffic! Cross it quickly and very carefully. Keep right for a few metres on the D20, then turn left onto Rue du Lavoir. Return to the start car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

Don't forget to visit the charming village of Buisson. From the Tour de Guet car park, which is particularly welcoming, small footprints painted on the ground guide visitors to a covered wash-house, a beautiful central square with a fountain and a bistro-restaurant-ice-cream parlour open all year round. From the square, a short circuit passes through a fortified gateway, topped by a bell tower, leading to the church and through flower-filled lanes. There is also a route along the old sentry walk, which offers a superb panoramic view of the Aygues valley to the north of the village.

Accompanied by around twenty hikers, we avoided most of the paved roads by walking along the vineyards, without any difficulty.

We appreciated the water source at the start + toilets. Very picturesque village, fountains and bistro (restaurant that does not serve drinks/no liquor licence). Three small climbs that are easily negotiated. Well-equipped picnic area (two large tables + space available). Lots of olive trees and fruit trees. A few very accessible forest trails. Very pleasant views. Map and GPS essential. VAISON is 10 km away, to round off this route.
This route is suitable for trail runners.
We are ready to do this mini hike again with family who are joining us next week.
