Loop between Montagut and Pont del Llierca, via Sant Eudald and Planseslloses

A circular route around the village of Montagut, where the first foothills of the Alta Garrotxa already offer some examples of Romanesque architecture. From the centre of Montagut, climb up to the church of Sant Eudald de Jou and then on to the oratory of Planselloses. You then descend towards the Pont del Llierca (where you can swim), passing under the Puig de l'Espigoler and Puig Sacreu, before returning to Montagut along the river.

Description of the walk

From the A-26 motorway between Besalu and Olot, take the GIP-5233 road to the centre of the village of Montagut i Oix. Park in the car park near the municipal swimming pool and follow the sign for "G49 Montagut".

(S/E) Take Avinguda de les Escoles, heading north-west, then continue along Cami del Cos for about 400 m, following the football pitch.

(1) Leave the road and take the path on the left, heading west, to follow the route that climbs towards "Ermita de Sant Eudald de Jou (pels Vilars)". Follow this track for 500 m until you arrive at a water tower.

(2) Continue straight ahead along the path that climbs into a forest of pine and holm oak trees.

(3) Cross the "Cami del Cos" path at the "AG1 Pla del Puig" signpost and continue along the path opposite, still heading towards "Ermita de Sant Eudald de Jou". Follow the forest track marked in yellow.

(4) Take the path on the right that descends towards the north-west. Continue through the forest until you reach the tarmac road.

(5) Turn right onto the road "Cami de Cab Bundanci a la Teulerua del Cos" and walk until the yellow markings indicate a dirt track on the left.

(6) Turn left onto the path heading northwest, then continue right around the bend. The climb winds through the woods until you reach the Sant Eudald de Jou hermitage. Take the opportunity to visit the Romanesque church and its shaded porch.

(7) In the bend north of the church, take the path that enters the woods, heading north-west. Follow it until you reach a dirt track.

(8) Turn right onto the forest track on the hillside, which offers beautiful views of the Fluvià valley. Follow the yellow markings until you reach the "AG2 - Planseslloses" signpost.

(9) Here, join the GR®1 "Sender Historic Catalunya". Take the forest track on the right, heading south-east towards Planseslloses and Montagut.

(10) Take the path on the left, leaving the main track for a short while, to pass by the Oratori de Planselloses, in a wood of holm oaks.

(11) Continue along the GR®1 trail, heading south-east towards Montagut.

(12) Continue opposite the GR®1 trail, heading south-east, to descend gently to the Pont del Llierca bridge.

(13) Pass through the car park under the trees to reach the road. Cross the road carefully near the G47 signpost to admire the Pont del Llierca bridge.

(14) Take the paved road towards Montagut, heading south-west. A short detour below the bridge allows you to take a refreshing dip in a large pool. Leave the road after 650 m.

(15) Turn left onto an old track that enters the woods. Do not continue towards the river but turn right to reach the fields. Follow a track parallel to the River Llierca, pass a small abandoned house and then take the path that leads into the woods (yellow markings) and arrives at a crossroads.

(16) Turn right onto the path heading south and start climbing slightly. When you reach the house of Can Xicó, continue climbing on the dirt track heading west. The track turns into a paved road and joins the GIV-5233, which runs from Montagut to Sadernes.

(17) Turn left, heading south, when you reach the village. After 300 m, turn right to return to the car park in Montagut (S/E).

Worth a visit

The church of Sant Eudald de Jou is nestled in a pass between the Cos mountain and the Serra de Palomeres mountain range. Its location explains its name, as the word Jou means pass or passage between two mountains.

The Cossos Sants or Planselloses oratory is dedicated to Saint Roch and the Virgin of Fatima.

The Pont del Llierca is a Romanesque bridge that has been used for commercial purposes since the14th century. The bridge was built between 1345 and 1346 by the Malart family, the barons of Sales. It provided a link between the small hamlets and farms on the western slope of the Llierca and its tributaries with Tortellà and Besalú. The bridge was part of the old road from Tortellà to Oix, which was used by pack animals. This bridge had become so strategic that the lords of Sales charged a toll for the passage of goods and livestock. Built of nummulite stone on rocky limestone ground 7-8 metres above the river, this grand and slender arched bridge is 19.10 metres in diameter. Its total length is 52.70 metres, with a width at the top of 2.30 metres on the inside and 3.10 metres on the outside, including the parapets.

I appreciate all the effort you put into offering interesting routes. I found it difficult to find my way around here, especially at the beginning. It wasted quite a bit of my time.
