Description of the route

Park in the car park at the boules court.

(S/E) Opposite the car park, take the D105 road towards Virieu-Le Grand.
Pass an old bread oven and continue on the D105.

(1) Turn left onto Chemin de Truquignin. Continue to the hamlet of Le Truc.

(2) Pass the bread oven in the hamlet of Le Truc until you reach a small wash house, then turn left.

(3) At the Y-junction, turn right north, continue and join the D904.

(4) Take care on mountain bikes, as this is a dangerous intersection.
Take the D8 road towards Hauteville, cross the railway line and take the path on the left, ignoring all the other paths. Continue until you reach the crossroads at the Bois Joly cliff.

(5) Take the path on the left that follows theGRP®® du Balcon du Valromey (red and yellow markings). If you are travelling too fast, you may pass it without seeing it. Continue to the village of Belmont. Turn left and pass a wash house. Head towards Chemin de Mazot and you will come to another crossroads.

(6) Take the path that leads into the forest and follows theGRP®® du Balcon du Valromey (red and yellow markings). A steep slope begins. Cross Vogland to reach the hamlet of Sammonod.

(7) In Sammonod, before joining the D8, turn left onto the path. If you are driving too fast, you may miss it. Continue north to rejoin the road.

(8) Turn left at the intersection with the road and continue for 30 metres, then take the path on the right towards Muffieu.

(9) Take care at the dangerous intersection, cross the D8, take Rue de Muffieu opposite, then the D54D which leads to Luthézieu. Cross this village and take the D54 south to a Y-junction.

(10) Leave the road and take the path on the left. Join the right bank of the Séran.

(11) Follow the Séran river along a small path to quickly reach the Marmites de Géant.
Enjoy this curiosity when the river is not dry.

(12) Head south on the path that follows theGRP®® du Balcon du Valromey, then leave theGRP®® at the intersection before Turignin. Pass in front of the old barn in Turignin. Continue south to join the D30 at the entrance to the village of La Bavoisière. Take care on mountain bikes as there is a dangerous intersection at the bottom of the slope.
For information, there is a viewpoint near the Cerveyrieu waterfall (see nearby chapter).

(13) Cross the D30 with caution and take the small path that descends into the forest. After crossing the Flon stream, rejoin the road that leads to Massignieu and follows theGRP®® from the Balcon du Valromey (red and yellow markings). Continue south, cross the village of Massignieu and arrive at a wash house.

(14) Stay on theGRP®® du Balcon du Valromey until you reach the Fierloz crossing.

(15) This passage known as the Fierloz may be closed in summer (during periods of drought due to the risk of fire). If so, continue straight ahead (Chemin de la Montée du Vaugrais) and take thefirst path on the right (Promenade des Garraz) until you reach the D1904 Route de Lyon (to rejoin the circuit).

(16) Take care on mountain bikes, as this is a dangerous intersection. Cross by turning left onto the D1904 for a few metres, then turn right onto Chemin des Framboisiers and left at the next intersection. Join the D1904 and cross the bridge over the Séran, then turn right, staying on theGRP®® and following the Séran.

(17) Difficult passage over a small bridge that is blocked by a barrier, but it can be crossed. If you have any problems, turn back and take the path that leads to the water treatment plant (to rejoin the route). Continue along the edge of the Séran.

(18) Take the wooden bridge and continue along the path towards Marlieu.

(19) Stay on the path that passes under the railway line and continue along the Séran river until you reach the Thuillère bridge.

(20) Cross the Séran river on the bridge, leave the road and take a path on the right.

(21) Take the path along the cliff side in the forest. A steep slope begins. This forest is partly private property and mushroom picking is prohibited.

(22) Be careful, there are several paths in this forest, which are not marked on the map. Use your GPS at intersections and follow signs for the village of Ardosset.

(23) Go through Ardosset, passing a bread oven. Turn right onto Rue du Cri towards the D105, which you will need to cross.

(24) Take Chemin du Molard, which climbs up to Grammont Castle, and head towards the village of Grammont.

(25) At the entrance to Grammont, take the path on the left below the castle. Be careful on mountain bikes as there is a dangerous intersection with the Route du Catton. At the intersection, turn left and follow the road for a few metres.

(26) Leave the road and turn right onto the path heading south. You will reach Lac de Chavoley.
This lake is private and swimming is not permitted.

(27) Follow the path towards the village of Chavoley.

(28) Leave the path and turn left onto the road leading to Chavoley.

(29) Turn right onto the D69 and at the Y-junction, take the left-hand road.

(30) At the crossroads, enjoy the view of the lake and head towards Morgnieu.

(31) On leaving Morgnieu, take the path on the right that leads to the forest. Continue north-west towards the Bois des Couleurs.

(32) When you leave the woods, enjoy the view and turn left onto a smoother road towards Saint-Martin-de-Bavel.

(33) Leave this path and turn right towards the D31C.

(34) Take care on your mountain bike at the dangerous intersection with the D31C. Turn right and continue for 15 metres towards Saint-Martin-de-Bavel, then cross the D31C and take the road on the left towards Golet and the D105.

(35) Cross the D105 and take a small road that climbs up to Chemin de la Pierre Grise.

(36) Turn left onto a road that is not shown on the map but does exist, towards Cochiot, then return to the D105.

(37) Take the D105 towards Saint-Martin-de-Bavel to return to the first crossroads.

(1) Follow the outward route to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

This hike can be done on an electric mountain bike; if using a conventional mountain bike, allow extra time to complete the loop.
Bring the Visorando app with GPS and map loaded.

Worth a visit

(13) If you have time, you can take the D30E for 600 metres to see the top of the waterfall.
A beautiful view awaits you. The waterfall is signposted. This detour is about 1.2 km there and back.

This is a beautiful mountain bike trail in a rural, uncrowded area. Follow the GPS track to stay on course; the route is very reliable.
The only slight downside is the section that runs alongside the Séran river shortly before the potholes, where we were on the left bank even though the route seemed to indicate the right bank, but we couldn't find the trail.
The tracks and single tracks are enjoyable and not very technical, but sometimes require a fair amount of effort on a standard mountain bike to climb the few fairly steep hills. However, this is no problem on an electric bike (the group was mixed).
I recommend this beautiful circuit to experienced mountain bikers who want to enjoy the environment to the full.

a few issues to resolve, some complicated sections without explanations, an IGN map is essential to find your way around. Very beautiful route with plenty of variety
