Circular route in Valromey via the Pont and Puits des Tines

This circular route straddling the Séran river is at a moderate altitude and therefore accessible in all seasons. It combines a forest trail with a more open environment, passing by some remarkable sites in Valromey: the Pont des Tines, the Étang des Alliettes, the Belvédère de Châteauneuf and the Puits des Tines.

Description of the walk

From Virieu-le-Grand, Belley or Culoz, head towards Artemare and then Champagne-en-Valromey. Follow the D31 north to Sutrieu. Park near the town hall.

(S/E) Head west opposite the town hall via Chemin de la Fruitière. Start climbing towards the forest and cross the Planachat road. Take the start of Chemin des Écoliers and after 100 metres, turn right onto theGRP® Balcon du Valromey marked forest path.

(1) The route then follows the edge of the forest northwards to Ruffieu. It starts to climb towards Les Buissons, continues on level ground and then descends towards Lompnieu.

(2) Do not descend to Lompnieu but continue through the forest, passing near an old quarry (Le Creux de Sable) and an old water tower.

(3) Climb back up the hillside to reach a forest road, which you follow downhill to Les Vibesses.

(4) Turn left to climb back up into the forest, taking a steep path straight up the slope, then veer right to descend to the D 31 south of Ruffieu.

(5) Turn left onto the road and, after 100 m, leave it to cut straight across towards Ruffieu via a path that descends and then climbs back up to the centre.

(6) At the crossroads (fountain), turn right towards Pont des Tines. The road becomes a path that descends, veering left until it crosses the Séran on a stone bridge.
20 m after this bridge, a path branches off to the right towards the Séran giant's kettles, where erosion has created a natural arch, the "Pont des Tines".

(7) Return to the path, take it to the right to climb back up and exit the forest. At the junction at 645 m, continue straight ahead towards the east until you reach the D54 road, which you take to the right, along the Ruisseau de la Serra stream to Moulin Livet.

(8) At the crossroads, turn left onto Chemin de Réoux and follow the road uphill to Réoux.

(9) Turn left to continue along a path that climbs through the forest, emerges into meadows and joins the Route des Alliettes, which you follow to the right until you reach the Étang des Alliettes.

(10) Walk along the lake and continue south on the road that descends to Songieu.

(11) In the centre, turn right onto Route de Châteauneuf towards the south-west. Leave the Grotte du Pic trail on your left and at the next crossroads, turn left heading south to go to the Ruines du Châteauneuf.

(12) Visit the site and continue south to the viewpoint.

(13) Return to the ruins.

(12) Just after passing them, take a path on the left between hedges that descends to join the road that has made a detour. Take it on the left to descend to Bassieu.

(14) At the junction with the D54, cross carefully to descend straight down towards the Séran.

(15) Cross the bridge and climb up a steep hill opposite. Before reaching Chavillieu, turn left towards Lilignod onto a road that descends gently to the bridge under Lilignod.
Stay on the right bank of the Séran and a few metres after the bridge, a path descends to the Puits des Tines (be careful, this site is not secure).

(16) Return to the road and follow it westwards uphill. At the first crossroads, turn left onto Chemin de Richin, pass a few houses and then a bridge over a leat. At the next junction, leave the road towards Ossy and continue straight on towards Sutrieu, cross a road at Sous la Venne and, at the church, turn left to join the D31 and then the town hall car park (S/E).

Notes

There are many ascents and descents on this route, but the total elevation gain remains reasonable.

Worth a visit

The first part offers views of the Grand Colombier opposite and, further away, the Chat, the Chartreuse, the Nord-Vercors and the Sept-Laux (Nord-Belledonne).
A botanical trail runs alongside part of the forest route.

The CD 31 follows the route of an ancient Roman road known as the Vie du Loup from south to north.

Among the sites visited:
- the Pont des Tines is a natural arch carved out by the Séran river in a landscape of giant's kettles.
- Étang des Alliettes is a pleasant spot for fishing and picnicking.
- Châteauneuf combines the historic site of the castle ruins with a viewpoint overlooking the Bas Valromey.
- The Puits des Tines is carved out at the foot of a waterfall on the Séran.

A lovely group outing. At this time of year, the forests change colour, adding a certain charm to this route, which is not difficult even though it runs largely along quiet local roads.

An easy hike, but with a lot of tarmac. The picnic by the pond is very pleasant. We didn't meet anyone.

A very beautiful hike with no difficulty. Accessible to all hikers without any problems, except for the distance.
The scenery is magnificent, with plenty of water in the river and streams (we saw some beautiful trout). There are very few cars on the tarmac roads, so no worries on that front.
We didn't meet anyone. What a pleasure for the eyes at this time of year to see all these fields in bloom.
Thank you very much for this beautiful route.

A lovely circular route in Valromey, accessible to everyone and enhanced by natural and other sites. The only downside is that there is far too much tarmac...

Hike completed this Sunday. We really enjoyed the interesting route, the architecture of the villages, and the natural heritage: waterfalls, potholes, the Pont des Tines bridge, the Puits des Tines well, and mountain landscapes.
A very open route with beautiful views. The ruins of Châteauneuf and its belvedere. The streams and rivers were full and the sound of water accompanied us almost throughout the entire walk.
Picnic by the Étang des Aliettes with tables and benches.
The only downside of the route from points 1 to 6 is that they are forest paths, and from 6 to the finish... 90% of the route is on very small tarmac roads. We only came across two vehicles.
The appeal of the hike outweighed this inconvenience... especially as we were lucky enough to find some morel mushrooms!
Thanks to the author.
