Retord Maquis Trail

This is a very beautiful hike, featuring landscapes of pastures and beech and fir forests, along easy paths.
Created in partnership with the Museum of Resistance and Deportation in Nantua, it passes by five farms where the maquis settled in 1943-1944, on the Retord plateau between the village of Hotonnes and the Plans d'Hotonnes resort. Five panels describe the history of this maquis.

Description of the walk

The starting point is Hotonnes Town Hall.

(S/E) From the trail map on the town hall wall, head towards the fountain and the mini-market, then after 100 metres turn left onto Rue du Crêt, heading north.

(1) Leave the village, leave the road on your left as you head towards the statue of the Virgin Mary, and continue along the tarmac road until you reach Rachet.

(2) Take the path on the right, following the hiking sign pointing towards "Sur le Geai" and the small sign for the maquis trail, which will guide you throughout the route. Climb up the path and you will arrive at the Sèche farm in the forest.

(3) Thefirst historical sign is located at the Sèche farm.
Continue climbing. Leave the path on your right that indicates the Croix du Mont. You will reach a crossroads with signposts.

(4) Turn right, following the sign for the Maquis trail. You will soon reach the Sur le Geai crossroads, under the high-voltage power lines.

(5) Turn right towards La Combette.

(6) Here you will find thesecond historical sign, for the Morez farm, which is now in ruins. Continue along the path to reach the Combette crossroads. The Combettes farm is completely destroyed; you will find thethird historical sign on the site.

(7) Follow the signs for "En Buyas". You will reach the Gabaret crossroads.

(8) At the crossroads, turn left, pass under the high-voltage power lines and continue to the En Buyas crossroads.

(9) Turn right and continue for about 300 metres until you reach the historical sign for Combe de Danoi and the Pré Carré farm.

(10) Turn around and return to the previous crossroads.

(9) Once back, turn right towards Les Plans d'Hotonnes. You will arrive above the biathlon stadium track.

(11) Follow the gravel path to the right and descend to the tarmac road and a crossroads.

(12) At the crossroads, continue in the same direction until you reach the very large crossroads in front of the Maison des Plans, then take a small road slightly to the left for about a hundred metres.

(13) You will see the Maquis monument, with the trail map sign next to it.

Retrace your steps back to the crossroads.

(12) Turn right towards the biathlon stadium. Pass in front of the biathlon stadium. Ignore the path on the left. Pass through Bordet, ignore the adjacent paths, and arrive at the Deschapoux cross.

(14) Continue southwards, walking alongside the Deschapoux farm, and you will soon reach thefifth historical sign for the Deschapoux farm.

(15) Continue along the path to the Sur le Geai crossroads, under the high-voltage lines.

(5) Turn right towards "retour Hotonnes" and you will soon reach the second crossroads on the way there.

(4) Turn right towards "retour Hotonnes" (not via Rachet). Head west downhill, passing the Lachat farm.

(16) At the Lagnieux crossroads, turn left onto the road heading south. After 400 metres, leave the tarmac road and take a path on the right. This will take you to "le chemin des Sioux" and its educational signs, before arriving at the road.

(17) Follow the road (D39) to the left, passing the hamlet of La Rivoire.

(18) At the Jubilee Cross, turn left, then return to the village of Hotonnes via Chemin du Crêt and the initial crossroads.

(1) Turn right and follow the same route as on the way there to return to the town hall car park (S/E).

Notes

(S/E) and (13) Information: Find the overall map of the trail here
There are no water sources or shelters along the route, apart from in Hotonnes and Les Plans d'Hotonnes, where shops are not always open. The route is 19 km long with an elevation gain of 580 m and is not difficult.

The route presented here is a 19 km circular loop starting from the town hall in Hotonnes. Another starting point is possible from the Maquis monument in Les Plans d'Hotonnes. And as the entire trail is shaped like a figure of eight, you can also do just one of the circular loops.

Worth a visit

This trail offers an insight into the history of the Resistance in the Ain region. But the charm of the paths and forests, the crosses and the Jura farms are enough to make it a very beautiful hike.

In winter, at the Plans d'Hotonnes resort, you can enjoy downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and biathlon.

Yesterday, 24/11/2024, 20 members of our Lyonnais Club went on this beautiful hike.
Sunshine, mild temperatures, little wind, little snow – unfortunately it had melted! ...
A pleasant hike through beautiful ash forests, along lovely paths dotted with the remains of farms belonging to the Resistance fighters.
Often moving memories.
The Retord plateau is not so flat...
Thanks to the author for this beautiful route.

A beautiful, easy hike, the trail is shaded in places, which is very welcome in hot weather.
There is a bit of tarmac but the roads are very quiet. The history is very well explained on the information boards and reminds us of many things about the resistance during the Second World War.
Thank you to the author for this enjoyable and relaxing experience.

Very nice hike starting from the Hotonnes Town Hall. Good explanations, no mistakes! Beautiful views. During this period of daily storms, the forest paths are extremely muddy. We had a picnic at Les Plans d'Hotonnes. The restaurant tables are available when it is closed! Very happy with our day in the Ain!

Hike starting from Les Plans d'Hotonnes. The southern circular route down to Hotonnes is not very interesting, with lots of tarmac roads. Fortunately, the climb back up is more enjoyable. Overall, a pleasant route. Thank you for sharing.

A beautiful hike, very pleasant after lockdown to walk through fields of flowers that have not yet been mowed. After a week of rain, the landscape is very green with many shades of colour. Beautiful weather. My only regret is that the peatland daffodils were a little wilted because the season is already well underway. A small inaccuracy in the GPX route at the Hotonnes map, near the Maquis memorial. We almost missed it because it is small and not very noticeable. The paths are well maintained, well marked and very passable. No difficulty, except for the distance, which is close to 19 km. I recommend this walk. There is little asphalt, and it is on small roads with very little traffic.
Thank you for this route.

It's a very beautiful route with a little snow under the trees.
The only difficulty is its length, but by stopping fairly often and walking at a normal pace, it took me just under six hours.

Hello,
The hike is interesting, even if there are few signs telling the story of these maquis. For my part, I started from Lachat to do a "figure 8".

We did the 'southern' circular clockwise. The signposting is sparse. The circular is rather uninteresting, with only one sign about the maquis, a ruined farm that is inaccessible, and a lot of tarmac. The hamlet of La Rivoire is nice, with its little chapel. On the way back up, you need to pay attention to the Chemin des Sioux.

We did the 'northern' circular anti-clockwise. More points of interest. At Les Plans d'Hotonnes, once you reach the stele, retrace your steps and turn right before the shooting range, which is under construction. In short, I preferred this part. To be done on snowshoes in winter!

If you are only doing the north circular, I think it is better to start from Les Plans d'Hotonnes. And there are two bars at the finish line!
