Circular route in the Anlier Forest starting from Heinstert

A peaceful route through woods and valleys. The Anlier Forest covers over 7,000 hectares. It is the largest contiguous beech forest in Belgium. It is here that the black stork has made its grand return to Wallonia, after a century of absence.

Description of the walk

The walk starts in Heinstert, on Klausewee Street heading towards Vlessart, opposite No. 344; there is parking on the grassy areas in front of the hedges by the houses.

(S/E) With your back to No. 344, take the road opposite; it becomes a farm track and runs behind the gardens of the houses. Ignore the path on the left and any that follow.

(1) Pass through a gate in poor condition. Enter the forest. Head downhill.

(2) A path joins from your right; head left and immediately turn right, then climb back up to the road. Cut across to the left and cross at the Chêne d'Anlier.

(3) Take the path straight ahead, go through the gate and continue straight on.

(4) At the three-way junction, leave the wide path that veers to the right and continue straight on. Stay on the most clearly marked path and cross the footbridge. Take the path on the right and follow the wide path for a short while.

(5) Turn immediately right once you reach the gap in the fence.

GR® signposting

Cross the jetty.

(6) Ignore the path coming from your left; you’ll return that way. Continue straight along the path.

(7) After 1.4 km, the path turns sharply to the left. Further up, ignore the path on your left and continue straight ahead.

(8) At the junction, carry on straight ahead, ignoring the side paths.

(9) At the next junction, turn left and leave the marked path.

No Markings

Follow the path back up to the stony track.

(10) Head left for 1.6 km along the track, which turns into a woodland path. Go downhill.

(6) At the bottom, turn right and cross the footbridge again.

(5) Go through the gap in the fence and continue straight on.

GR® signposting

Stay on the wide path, which turns into a footpath.

(11) Cross the footbridge and continue to the road.

No signposting

Turn left, leaving the markings behind, and walk up the road for about 700m.

(12) At the top of the climb, turn right and follow the stony path for about 800m.

(13) At the wide junction, turn left and head downhill. Ignore the path coming in from your left. Pass through a cleared area and continue straight ahead. Leave the path on your left and continue straight ahead. Ignore the path on your right.

(14) Pass a gate that is in no better condition than the one at the start. Ignore the path on your right. The path becomes a country road. View over the valley. At the N867, turn left and return to the car park (S/E).

A lovely walk in an area I didn't know!
The GPX track helped us with a few sections where we weren’t sure if we were in the right place!
