Circular above the Chamier valley.

A beautiful balcony hike with superb views of the Ruisseau de Chamier valley. In autumn, the colours are magnificent. We start from the Montselgues plateau and descend gently into the valley before climbing back up to the Montselgues plateau in a fairly strenuous climb.

Description of the walk

Park in Montselgues near the town hall and church.

(S/E) With your back to the town hall, head south towards Laval d'Aurelle. Continue straight ahead until you reach a crossroads with two buildings.

(1) Turn right onto the track on the plateau, heading towards Laval d'Aurelle.

(2) Look for the start of the return trail on the left and continue straight ahead, staying on the track.

(3) Ignore the access roads to the antenna on the right and continue straight ahead. Pass in front of the bird of prey observatory and approach the small road coming from Montselgues.

(4) About 50 metres before you reach it, leave the track on the left, heading towards Laval d'Aurelle, following a path that crosses the meadow downhill. Reach the hamlet of Pradon.

(5) Stay on the road to cross the hamlet: the shortcut on the IGN map that cuts the circular route is no longer authorised as it is private property. Turn left above the houses to rejoin the balcony path overlooking the valley to Chalendas.

(6) Leave the path and take the track on the left that leads to the Chamier road, which you will reach just after passing the Ruisseau du Triou stream.

(7) Head right and follow the road to Prévenchet.

(8) Take the tarmac lane on the left and pass in front of an isolated house. Cross the meadow and at the end, cross a slightly bushy area. Go up following the path, which makes several tight bends, and rejoin the circular coming from Montselgue and Chamier.

(2) Continue to the right. The climb up to Montselgues through the boulders is well maintained and offers magnificent views of the valley. Return to the car park (S/E).
