Circular Ventographe at the foot of Mont Mézenc

This is a short circular loop in the Mezenc National Forest, from La Roche Pointue to Le Ventographe, passing by the peat bogs. Le Ventographe is a quirky object created by a DIY artist, placed on a ridge; it is the centre for transmitting messages to the wind, which are received further down by another equally quirky work of art!

Description of the walk

Parking is available on the side of the D274 road below the Dents du Diable.

(S/E) From the car park, head north and downhill.

(1) Less than 100 metres later, leave the road and follow theGR®420(red and white markings) to the right. Stay parallel to the road, which is located higher up. Then leave the road, enter the woods and go around the Grosse Roche on the right. You will come to a large track and follow it to the left for about 100 metres.

(2) At the crossroads, continue straight ahead on the flat track and leave theGR® which climbs to the right. In the forest, you will have views of Chaudeyrolles and Mont Signon. You will arrive at the ridge line coming from Mont Mezenc. Ignore a path on the right.

(3) At a point on the ridge (elevation 1508), turn left (north) and descend. The trail then heads east and turns north, losing altitude. After a few bends, you will arrive at a platform that allows you to observe the large La Rochette peat bog from above without damaging the natural environment.

(4) Continue down the path until you reach an intersection.

(5) Turn right at a sharp angle (south-southeast). After about 300 metres, you will arrive at another, smaller bog, where there is a platform so that you do not trample the environment.

(6) The path then climbs slightly to reach the Médille ridge, which you follow to a small pass.

(7) Cross a fence (close it behind you) and climb up the Brousson ridge. You will soon see a strange object: the windograph! This surprising invention was created by a local artist (Nicolas Savoye) in collaboration with the École du Vent.

(8) Retrace your steps back to the small pass.

(7) Then turn right (north). Pass the hamlet of Chanal and, after a slight climb, you will reach a small pass. Descend on the other side to reach the hamlet of Les Cris. Follow the road to the left until you reach the Chantemerle crossroads.

(9) Follow the D274 to the left. Climb a little, cross Le Salin and pass a car park on the right.

(1) Continue for less than a hundred metres to return to the starting car park (S/E).

Notes

You cross the Salin very close to its source, which is north of the Grande Roche.

Worth a visit

To reach the foot of Roche Pointue, take the road above the trail.

If you wish, you can climb to the top of the Grosse Roche for a more open view than if you stay on the trail.

On the D410 road, on the southern slope of Mezenc, towards the hamlet of Cros, you can admire the Centre de réception des messages du vent (Wind Message Reception Centre), another quirky work that has transformed an old ski lift.

After Chantemerle, following the road, you will cross the Salin: this small river flows below in a canyon where there can be a beautiful waterfall depending on the water flow. It is advisable to go up the canyon from the north when arriving from Chaudeyriolles.

Another local attraction is the peatland of Chaudeyrolles, which can be explored via a discovery trail.

The first part of the route is beautiful, very varied and shaded.
The end is killer, which is a shame. As soon as you hit the road and the tarmac, it's painful and the climb seems endless.

3-hour circular loop.
It's not easy to find the "Dents du Diable" car park when you don't have GPS coordinates (no smartphone).
There's a problem with the signposting in the description at point 2. Luckily, I found a group of young people who were following the route with the app.
It's a shame there's so much tarmac from Chantemerle to the car park (about 2 km).
The wind gauge is a nice curiosity.

A lovely walk; beautiful views and, above all, shade, which is very welcome in this hot weather. The "Ventographe" can inspire a moment of meditation in this magnificent setting.

A magnificent walk with superb views of the Ardèche and Haute Loire. The wind vane, as useless as it is poetic, blends harmoniously into the landscape (in my opinion).

A beautiful route with stunning views. The Ventographe is worth a detour; it's great fun to leave a message...
