The hike starts in front of the church (car parks nearby).
(S/E) With your back to the church square in Véranne, you will see a large metal cross at the end of the square. Turn left at the cross onto Rue de l'Industrie.
At the crossroads, first turn right then left to go down Rue du Drevet. Pass a cul-de-sac on your right. At the next fork, turn right and then immediately right again onto the "Vieille Route" (signposted). Your path seems to turn left, but continue straight ahead on a less travelled path. Cross a tarmac road and continue straight ahead. When your road turns left, take the grassy path that descends opposite. You will come to a road which you take to the right to cross an old bridge (there is an old ruined factory on your right). Continue up the road.
(1) At the sign: Le Viallon - alt. 494 m, turn right towards Bazin. Pass the hamlet of Bazin. Further on, turn right towards Aire d'Accueil (pilgrim's shelter). Pass the small shelter. Your path turns left.
You will come to a small road (small transformer opposite). Turn left onto it and, fairly quickly, leave it to take a path on the right.
(2) At the sign: Le Crêt - alt. 600 m, turn left. You will come to a small tarmac road. Turn right. Very soon, you will see a narrow path on the left of the road (white/yellow markings). Take this path. It will quickly lead to a small road. Cross it and continue straight ahead (diagonally). At a fork, take the left branch, then the right branch at the next fork.
(3) At the sign for Maison Sabot (altitude 655 m), continue straight ahead, leaving the marked path. Very soon, you will see a path climbing up to the left. Take this path. At a fork, go left. Cross a small tarmac road and continue straight ahead (white/green markings). You will come out onto a road in the middle of a sharp bend (D34 marker).
(4) Take it on the right, then leave it very quickly to take a path that climbs up on the right as well. Ignore a path coming from the right and continue on your path.
(5) At the signpost: altitude 830 m, turn right towards Le Buet. You will soon come to another fork (signpost altitude 830 m). Turn right.
(6) You enter the hamlet of Le Buet. First turn right then left. Leave the hamlet. Further on, with a large copse of conifers on your left above you, you will see a sign for "Buet - alt. 939 m". Take the path on the left, flanked by low stone walls, which climbs towards the copse. Your path turns right, then makes a hairpin bend to the left before climbing straight up the slope into the conifer forest. You come out onto a wide track which you climb on the right.
(7) At the signpost: alt. 1075 m on your right, turn right towards the chapel. You are now on a ridge path offering beautiful views.
(8) You will arrive at the Saint-Sabin Chapel. This is an ideal spot for a picnic. Enjoy the view of the Rhône Valley and, in the distance, the Alps and Pre-Alps. Once you have had your fill, take the path that descends behind the chapel (there is an educational sign about the Gauls). From now on, you will be walking downhill.
Halfway down the slope, you will come to a discreet fork. Take the right-hand path.
(9) At the signpost: Croix de Saint-Sabin - altitude 1057 m, turn right. You will arrive at the Vert Âne inn. Walk along the terrace and, after the buildings, take the path that descends to the right towards Véranne. The signpost indicates 5.7 km. We will cover less distance by taking a shortcut.
(10) You will come out onto a track near a large building. Go down to the right. After a while, the track turns right before joining another track. Turn left.
(11) At the sign: La Nordet - alt. 786 m, take the narrow but well-marked path that descends to the right. At a fork, turn right. You will come to a house, which you go around to reach the tarmac road.
(12) Further down, you will see a small private pond on your right. Cross a bridge. You will come to a larger road. Take it on the right, walking on the left-hand side of the road so you can see the cars coming. It will take you back to Véranne (S/E). It's not a very pleasant stretch, but... you have to get back to where you started!
