Description of the walk

Park in the centre of Baziège, Allée Paul Marty.

(S/E) Walk along the esplanade of Allée Paul Marty. After the large cooperative building, turn left. Continue to the junction with Grand Rue.

(1) Cross and continue straight ahead, following the red and white markings ofthe GR® 653, Chemin de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. You will see a Lauragais barn on your left. Go under the SNCF bridge. Continue to the Labastide road and cross it. Climb up the hill opposite via the Chemin de la Côte Vieille, continue along the Chemin de Côte de Montserre to reach the top of the hill.
Turn right onto the gravel path to reach a fork.

(2) Turn left downhill, following the fence of a private animal park. Also follow the Ruisseau de Visenc stream. You will reach a small bridge giving access to the hamlet of Cammas.

(3) Continue straight ahead on theGR® to reach a new bridge.

(4) Cross the stream via the bridge on the right. Continue straight ahead until you reach the Sainte-Colombe Chapel. Stay on theGR® trail, following the red and white markings. Pass in front of the oratory, then turn left onto the slightly uphill tarmac road. At the next crossroads, turn right onto the grassy path and descend to the bottom of the valley. At the intersection of paths, near the poplar trees, cross the stream and climb the hill to the calvary on the edge of the D11d road.

(5) Leave the red and whiteGR® markings here and take the yellowPR® markings. Cross the road and continue straight ahead. At the crossroads, continue straight ahead, leaving the hamlets of En Roussaud and Le Bosc on your right and left. You will then come to a right-angled crossroads. Continue straight ahead.

(6) Turn right towards the hamlet of Limoges, keeping to the yellow markings. Pass through the hamlet of En Delord and then rejoin the D11d. Turn left and follow it to the dangerous crossroads with the D38e road and Chemin de Monteserre.

(7) Stay on the yellow markings and turn right onto Chemin de Monteserre. Begin another climb to reach the top of the hill and the crossroads with the mill you passed on the way up. Enjoy the view of the Aéropostale lighthouse opposite.

(2) From here, retrace your steps to return to the car park in the centre of Baziège, Allée Paul Marty (S/E).

Worth a visit

Landscape:

  • view of Baziège and the Pyrenees on a clear day.

Heritage:

  • Sainte-Eutrope - Sainte-Colombe Chapel: this very old church, dating from before the 12th century, was pillaged and burned in 1570 by the Huguenots. Rebuilt, it has suffered the ravages of time. Its gabled bell tower dates from the 18th century. The chapel, built on a basilica plan, has three chapels. In the choir, a painting from 1668 depicts the Crucifixion. The Baroque wooden altar dates from the 18th century. A wooden bust of Sainte-Colombe occupies a niche in the choir. The former parish of Sainte-Colombe and its chapel are under the patronage of Saint-Eutrope. Poor and sparsely populated, it was attached to that of Saint-Étienne-de-Baziège during the French Revolution. During the Wars of Religion in 1750, Sainte-Colombe was destroyed and its roof burned. This chapel has been listed as a historic monument since 1986.
  • Aéropostale lighthouse: Built around 1925, this lighthouse was used by the Aéropostale airline, which carried mail from Toulouse-Montaudran to South America. It was the first beacon on the route connecting Toulouse to the Mediterranean coast at Gibraltar by air, then the west coast of Africa to Dakar before crossing the South Atlantic to Brazil. Along with the Montferrand lighthouse, the Baziège lighthouse is one of the last remaining examples of the beacons that enabled the early days of night flying. History tells us that Antoine de Saint-Exupéry stopped at Baziège with his plane while making a connection.

A very good route for getting back into cycling.
Not too many roads, beautiful views of the Pyrenees and interesting points of interest: animal park, Sainte Colombe Chapel (not open to the public) and the Aéropostale lighthouse.

A beautiful journey, with two very interesting points of interest: the private animal park and the Sainte Colombe chapel. The Aéropostale lighthouse (at the very top of the final hill) is quite inconspicuous, and I had trouble finding it.

A very pleasant hike in the Lauragais countryside, almost entirely on paths crossing farmland with beautiful scenery.

A pleasant short walk with beautiful views of the Pyrenees, once you leave the distribution centre buildings behind. Ideal for winter, as there isn't much shade along the route.

A very pleasant walk without too much road. The last part, after the chapel until the return, is a little busier. The first part is excellent, with beautiful paths through fields and lovely views.
I didn't start in Baziège to avoid the road, but went directly to the hills near the animal park.
It's also worth noting how much fun the "zoo" is, even without children!
Worth doing again.
