The start is at the hunting car park near the Saute quarry, accessible from the Orsans road at Gros Tilleul and the Oratory. You can also set off from the town hall car park. (See practical information).
(S/E) Set off along the Chemin de la Saute, which you have just taken, and head for the junction with the Route d’Orsans and the Gros Tilleul.
(1) Turn left, pass the Route des Faubourgs and, a little further on, veer slightly to your left as you leave this road. Continue straight on until you reach a junction with a statue of the Virgin Mary and the Croix du Jubilé.
(2) Turn right to return to the village. A little further on, look out for a large farmhouse at the junction of the Grande Rue and the Rue de la Petite Côte. This is the Lebrac house.
(3) Take this street on the left at the corner of the house and you’ll reach a Fork in the road. Take the left-hand branch, and further on, turn left again, ignoring the path that climbs straight ahead. Continue along this route until you reach the chalet at a place called Beiche. Shortly afterwards, you’ll come to the crossroads at the 590-metre mark.
(4) Turn sharply right, then further up, turn left, following the hedge. At the end of the hedge, turn left, heading towards the white track ahead of you. Take this track on your right, ignore the first track on the right and you’ll reach a crossroads on the edge of a copse.
(5) Take this path on the right, which crosses pastures and then runs alongside a wood. It then heads due east as it enters the forest. Continue up the slope, which rises and runs alongside large boulders. Reach the bottom of the ravine at the foot of the cliff.
On your right, you’ll find the path leading to the Grotte des Bougeottes for a round trip. Enjoy the scenery and, depending on your preference and equipment (torch), venture inside carefully. Take a look at the engraved stone and head back the way you came. Walk along the entire cliff face beneath this large rocky outcrop and, at its left-hand end, find the path that climbs up to the viewpoint. At the top, turn left and head towards the cross.
(6) Then head back the way you came, continuing straight on and ignoring the side paths leading from the cave. Follow this signposted path, which turns right before joining a main track. Follow it to the left and you’ll reach a large crossroads at elevation 732.
(7) Turn left, leaving the signposted path. Continue in this direction until you reach a junction with a tarmac road.
(8) Turn left, passing the road on your left. Walk alongside some meadows, then enter the forest. After a bend to the right, look for a small track on your left. Be careful, as it is barely visible (see practical information).
(9) Enter the woodland and walk a few dozen metres due south along this bramble-choked path; it skirts a small sinkhole before joining the clearer path marking the boundary of the municipality. Continue to the right to approach the edge of a pasture. Look for the path branching off to your left.
(10) Follow this path to quickly reach a forest track. Take it on your right and cross the whole of the Tuchevey woodland to reach the RD27.
(11) Cross it carefully and, shortly afterwards, you’ll come to a farm track. Take it to the right, skirting the fields, until it ends in a pasture.
(12) Walk along the edge of the meadow until you reach the corner. From there, follow the route shown on the map, or use a compass or the app to guide you.
Head diagonally left for a few dozen metres towards the south-west, then turn slightly to the right, heading first west and then gradually west-north-west to cross the fir forest and then the clear-cut area.
There is no proper path, just a faint track (the official route shown on the map soon becomes invisible). Even thePR® trail for the ‘War of the Buttons’ route isn’t marked on maps in this area!
You’ll soon come across a forest track and a picnic bench.
(13) Head into the woods towards the table on thePR® trail, which is signposted again. Carry on until you reach the hut from the novel, rebuilt by the village schoolchildren.
(14) Turn sharply left, heading south. A little further on, the lovely path turns due west. Continue along this long, straight stretch until you reach the boundary between the two municipalities.
(15) Then turn left down the slope and, a few dozen metres further on, look out for the entrance to the Grande Sommière (a wooden sign that is more or less visible).
(16) Head off to your left, due east, into the Grande Sommière and ignore all side paths and various signposts. Continue straight on until you reach a bend in the Chemin de la Saute. Turn right down the slope and make your way back to your car park, not forgetting to take a look at the quarry (S/E).
