Departure from the church square in Saint-Martin-de-Fressengeas. A sign on the side of the road, opposite the town hall, indicates the directions for the three circular hiking loops in the municipality. This route is the Yellow circular.
Yellow markings throughout the hike.
(S/E) Follow the road to the left until you reach the edge of the village and, facing a calvary, after going around the "old bakery", take a path on the left that descends between meadows and woods. The path gives way to a tarmac road to cross the hamlet of La Rebière. At the crossroads in the centre of the hamlet, go straight ahead. After the last houses, the path branches off to the left and descends to the Queue d'Âne river.
(1) Cross the river, either over the culvert or through the ford, and go up a sunken path on the right, between meadows. Cross a road and, halfway up the hill, turn left. Continue along this path between woods and meadows.
(2) Depending on the season, there are two alternative routes marked out: the one on the left is only accessible from October to May and is closed off in summer. It turns right after about 200 metres and enters the woods.
The other, accessible all year round, goes straight ahead. It turns left into the forest and winds its way through the ferns. The two paths meet again, still in the forest.
(3) After the paths rejoin, the trail begins to descend and crosses a road. Continue straight ahead and then, at a fork, go left. Descend through the forest into a small valley where the Queue d'Âne stream flows. Cross over another culvert. The trail then climbs steeply to an intersection with a road and a house on the left.
(4) Take the road on the left for about 100 metres, then take a stony path on the right that climbs between meadows, with a fairly steep slope. At a farm on the left, the path gives way to a tarmac road. Follow it to its intersection with the Saint-Martin-de-Fressengeas road (well and calvary). Turn left to reach the village and continue straight on to the church square (S/E).
, even though it was a hot day! I'd say it's a refreshing route.
