Parking at the Étang du Coucou car park (access via Schirmeck and Rothau).
(S/E) At Étang du Coucou, leave the road and the forest track and take the steep path marked with a Red Disc, which climbs to the left towards La Chatte Pendue.
(1) When the path joins a wide forest track marked with a Blue Saltire, follow this to the right and head straight on towards the Col du Hantz. Let it veer left at the summit and continue following the same markings to the Monument des Passeurs before the former Franco-German border.
(2) At the Monument des Passeurs, continue straight ahead on the Red Triangle for a brief detour into Lorraine. Then turn right, then left at the crossroads before continuing to the right to the summit of the former Haute Loge hilltop (stone shelter).
(3) From the shelter, head due north down to the forest track (former distillery) and follow it to the right. It soon joins the track taken on the way out and the GR®532 (Yellow Rectangle). Turn right and follow the same path as on the way out to the Monument des Passeurs.
(2) At the Monument des Passeurs, continue straight on to join the forest track and follow the path marked with a Yellow Rectangle to the right towards La Chatte Pendue. At the crossroads, turn left.
(4) Leave the Route Forestière des Quatre Hêtres and head left up the GR®©532 to the summit of La Chatte Pendue via metal steps.
(5) From La Chatte Pendue, descend along the winding path, ignoring the first fork, until you reach the next junction.
(6) Leave the Yellow Rectangle on the right via the Red Disc to reach the Ferme-auberge du Bambois (elevation gain of 283 m). At the hairpin bend, turn left then take the first track on the right. At the next hairpin bend, turn left.
(7) On the path to the farmhouse inn, cross the Route Forestière de la Ligne.
(8) When you reach the Route Forestière de Plaine, continue to the right.
(9) Then turn left at the junction to reach the farmhouse inn.
(10) From the farmhouse inn, take the same route back up to the top of the climb, at the foot of the summit of La Chatte Pendue.
(6) Follow the GR®©532 to the right, then continue straight on towards Château de Salm.
(11) After the château, the path (very steep) descends towards the hamlet of Salm. At the junction, continue straight ahead on the path that passes by the forest house of the same name.
(12) Take the track on the right for a few metres, then turn left onto the Route Forestière de Salm to reach the first houses.
(13) At the first houses, follow the road to the left, then the Green Disc path, which leads back to the Étang du Coucou (S/E).
