Cesson Circular and the Briard Villages

Cesson, its neighbourhoods and the Briard villages to the west, the Seine, a few ponds, a wash house, calvaries, a castle and a forest. Prehistoric remains, a menhir in the Bois de Sainte-Assise and the remains of a Gallo-Roman villa in the windmill plain bear witness to the ancient occupation of our territory. Not far from the Ru de Balory, at the end of Rue de la Fontaine, there was a spring, now tapped, near which people settled in the Middle Ages, soon building a church dedicated to Saint Martin. The development of the village and its two main hamlets, Saint-Leu and Verneau, was relatively slow. A table drawn up in 1793 shows that there were around 250 citizens.

Description of the walk

Park in one of the two car parks located on Rue de la Gare in Cesson. 77240

(S/E) Head towards the northern end of the car park and take Chemin de la Messe to reach the large roundabout.

(1) Take the road on the left and carefullycross two slip roads: there is no protected crossing. Turn left at the third slip road, go under the D346 tunnel and continue for about 20 metres.

(2) Take a path on the left, the entrance to which is not very visible. Further on, turn sharply right to reach a pond, then turn left to follow the bank until you reach the first path on the left. Take this path, turn right twice, and head across the field, following the red and white markings of the GR®2. Pass a beautiful castle on your right and continue to Saint-Leu.

(3) Turn right onto Rue Neuve, then right again at the crossroads to follow Rue Souveraine. Continue along the path that follows it, keep to the right, staying on the GR®, and you will reach the edge of a wood.

(4) Take the path on the right, running alongside it, towards Noisement, and rejoin the tarmac road at the first houses. Turn left onto Rue du Moulin Pessard, then right onto the first path to cross the Ru de Balory.

(5) Take Chemin de Noisement on the left, and first turn right then left at the crossroads to keep going in the same direction. Cross Ru de Balory again and, at the calvary, turn right onto Rue de Melun.

(6) Turn right onto Chemin de la Porte Jaune; cross Ru de Balory again and turn onto the path on the left. Continue to the right, at the end of Rue du Vieux Moulin, cross Rue Ernest Legouve carefully and continue straight ahead. At the end, turn left into Parc de la Baronnie, cross Ru de Balory again and leave the Seine-Por town hall on your left as you cross the small car park.

(7) Turn right onto Rue de Melun, ignore the first crossroads and take Rue Jazet on the right at the next one, which becomes Rue Suzanne Ruelle after the bend.

(8) Turn left onto Rue de la Croix Fontaine and continue straight ahead to reach the banks of the Seine. Continue until you reach a three-way junction.

(9) Turn right onto the path and continue to Avenue du Pavillon Royal.

(10) Turn right, arrive at the Pavillon Royal, and take Allée Bourette on the left. At the crossroads, turn left diagonally and continue for about 200 metres.

(11) Turn right, pass in front of the monument, then turn left onto Allée Bourette again. Then turn right onto Route des Écuyers, then left at the first crossroads. Make the first turn left then right with the path to join the D346.

(12) Carefully cross the departmental road and the access ramp, and continue straight ahead until you reach the junction of the picnic area on the right. Take a short detour to get there.

(13) Retrace your steps, rejoin the route on the right, and join the D50.

(14) Cross it carefully at the pedestrian crossing, head left towards the crossroads, then turn right to follow Avenue de la Clairière. Turn right again onto Rue des Champignons, then take the first path on the left. Take the right-hand path at the crossroads, then follow a series of bends to the left and right to reach the banks of the Étang de Balory lake, after crossing a small stream. Walk along the edge of the lake, then turn left to reach Place de l'Étang and its small car park.

(15) Cross Rue de l'Étang and continue straight ahead on Promenade du Bourg to reach Place de la Libération. Turn right onto Rue de l'Église, passing Nandy Town Hall, Saint-Léger Church and the château, all on your left.

(16) Turn left onto Chemin du Lavoir, walk along a pond on your left and, at the end, turn left at the pumping station.

(17) Take the path on the right, continue along Rue du Pays Bas and cross Rue de Montbreau with care . You will come out onto Rue Gally.

(18) Turn right, then left onto a path after No. 5. Go around the Coulevrain buildings on the left and join Rue de la Libération.

(19) Cross carefully at the pedestrian crossing, continue straight ahead, following the path that runs along the banks of the two ponds, before reaching the large roundabout on Avenue de la Haye.

(20) Go around the roundabout on the right, cross Avenue de la Haye, then turn right onto the path that runs alongside it. Continue straight ahead to return to the roundabout where you started and go around it on the left.

(1) Turn left onto Chemin de la Messe and return to the car park (S/E).

The start is a bit chaotic, but it’s easy enough to find the footpath again. The access to point 2 seems a bit makeshift; I’m not sure if it will continue to be maintained in future to link up with the PR further on.

Once you’ve entered the Bois de Saint-Leu, after point 2, I think you need to be wary of the ‘turn-off’ to the right to go and see the Ru de Balory: admittedly, it’s quite nice to see, and there’s an aquatic life observation point at the end, but to reach the path running alongside this stream, you have to go through a fence where the wire mesh has been torn away. It’s probably been that way for a long time, but there’s always the risk that it might be repaired and that you’ll have to turn back to rejoin the hiking trail straight ahead.

To reach the picnic area at point 13, go a little further if you’re following the GPX track: the access point indicated no longer exists, probably for quite some time (the vegetation has reclaimed the area). But anyway, I wouldn’t advise stopping here: the lake is nothing special, and the D50 road running just behind it is very noisy.

In Nady, the GPX track takes you right onto Rue des Champignons from Avenue de la Clairière, then tries to send you down a narrow lane on the left. I wouldn’t recommend taking it: it’s not maintained, and there were lots of branches making it difficult to get through.

Apart from these issues, you pass through quite a few really lovely and charming spots. But there’s also far too much tarmac for my liking (it remains a fairly urban walk), and far too many sections close to (or on) very busy roads. You never completely escape the noise of the cars, which, for me, is a deal-breaker (hence my rating).

There were quite a few people out when I went: it was Easter Monday and the weather was lovely.

Thanks anyway to gege0697 for the route description!

A lovely walk with sections through the forest, along the Seine and through charming villages. Two points to note, however: the route description lacks details on signposting, so you need to follow the GPX file; furthermore, it would be helpful to mention that the walk is easily accessible by RER (or train, which is one of our selection criteria).

The start of the hike was a bit tricky because of roadworks in the woods, making it difficult to walk. We passed through a pretty village and had a very pleasant hike.
