Bucey-lès-Gy circular route via the orientation table

Bucey-les-Gy is a “Petite Cité Comtoise de Caractère” nestled in the Morthe valley, within the triangle formed by the towns of Gray, Vesoul and Besançon.
Ancient and Merovingian graves attest to a very long-standing presence in Bucey-les-Gy. Until 1091, the village belonged to the Counts of Burgundy, before being ceded to the Archbishops of Besançon.
The hamlet of Saint-Maurice, which you will pass through on your walk, was largely destroyed in 1944 in retaliation for acts of resistance.

Description of the walk

Head to Bucey-lès-Gy and park in a small car park on Rue de Gueldry, 300 m past Rue du Pont de Gueldry.

(S/E) Join Rue de Gueldry and head left, cross the bridge over the Morthe and, at the next junction with Rue de Roche, turn right. Stay on this road until you leave the village.

(1) At the last houses, take the path branching off to the right. Stay on this path and ignore the first two paths branching off to the left. You will come to a field gate.

(2) Go through it and make sure you close it properly behind you. Cross the field in a straight line to reach a designated exit to leave the park. At the path ahead, turn right.

(3) At the next junction, turn left at the hairpin bend. Continue along this path, passing the old Plumont Farm, until you reach a junction at an altitude of 346.

(4) At this junction, continue straight ahead and then take the first path on the left.

(5) On this path, at altitude 325, continue straight on, then at altitude 321, at the junction with a white track, continue straight ahead towards the spring and a junction.

(6) At the crossroads, turn right towards the village of Saint-Maurice. At the entrance to the village, on the right, note the Saint-Maurice Fountain.
Cross the village via Rue René Faure, then, at the next junction, turn left onto Place Jean Moulin and head towards Rue Marc Coursilly.
Leave the village and walk about 400 m along the road to the altitude of 278.

(7) Take the second dirt track on the right, signpostedPR®. After 150 m, turn right onto the path leading uphill towards Grande Bruyère. Stay on this path until you reach a very unusual orientation table.

(8) Continue to the point with an altitude of 331, where thePR® meets theGR®145. Turn left and walk 250 m.

(9) Leave theGR® and continue on thePR® to the right. Ignore the first path on the right; keep going, hugging the left-hand side. Pass by a small airfield and go through the gates (make sure to close them properly). Continue on thePR® to the Ferme des Combes (when I passed through in February 2024, thePR® was overgrown with trees, making progress difficult).

(10) After the farm, leave thePR® and continue straight on, towards the hamlet of La Caborde. Take care to take the first path on the left, which leads back, at an altitude of 271, to thePR® you left earlier.

(11) Continue straight on and follow thePR® to a fork at an altitude of 300 metres.

(12) Turn right and arrive at the junction ofthe PR® and theGR®145.

(13) Turn right to follow theGR® for about 150 m, and enter the village via Rue Folle; then, at the junction, turn right onto Chemin des Craies and continue to the cemetery.

(14) The Caveau Duchon, a unique monument, can be seen at the entrance to the cemetery. A mausoleum? A burial vault?
Continue along Rue du Mont; the church is on the left. In front of the church, enjoy the view over the village. Return to Rue du Mont and continue downhill for 150 m.

(15) Turn into the small, sloping cul-de-sac on the left, which leads to Rue du Canal. Turn right onto this street for a short walk and admire the town hall and wash house, a truly magnificent example of local architecture. Retrace your steps and continue straight on along Rue du Canal, passing Rue du Pont de Gueldry on your right, and join the Sentier de la Maria on the right, which leads back to the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

The town hall-washhouse is a typical architectural monument of the Haute-Saône. The one in Bucey-lès-Gy was built in the 19th century; it is listed as a Historic Monument.
As for sacred architecture, it is well worth visiting the Gothic church, which was begun in the 14th century and completed in the 16th. Its elegant façade was rebuilt by Colombot in 1760.
The Clos Chapel, meanwhile, dates from the 18th century.

The Duchon vault, a unique monument at the entrance to the Bucey-lès-Gy cemetery. A mausoleum? A burial vault? This tower is topped by a cross.

A lovely walk, culminating in the viewpoint which offers a 180° view of the Saône Valley. Just one slight downside: we were surprised to come across motorbikes at point 9 coming from the dry grassy areas... so you need to keep your ears open and stay alert!

A lovely, peaceful walk with a well-planned route, though you’ll need to keep a close eye out when crossing certain hills, particularly the ‘Veaux’ hill, where you can give the free-roaming horses a big cuddle....
