Description of the walk

The route starts from the car park behind the town hall in Bourg de Sirod.

(S/E) Take the wide track at the edge of the car park, which soon climbs up to the foot of the rocks. Go through the fortified gate.

(1) Immediately after the gate, turn left towards the edge of the Roches Graviers cliff. Follow this path for a very long time.

(2) Pass the ruins of Châteauvillain, and continue through the forest and boxwood. Ignore the path coming in from the left (elevation 795) and head for another crossroads (elevation 794 m).

(3) At this three-way junction, turn right towards Les Champs Cottets. Join a tarmac road and follow it to the right. You’ll come to a hairpin bend to the left.

(4) Go straight on along the farm track, then immediately enter the meadow on your left (markings are barely visible). Follow the edge of the pasture, then the hedge, until you reach a large stone that allows you to pass through the hedge. (On the left, an unsecured viewpoint.)

(5) Turn right towards the Escalier des Coucous. Cross this section, using the handrail provided if necessary. Once at the bottom, look out for the path between the large boulders leading to the Rocher des Commères. A very picturesque stretch between a moss-covered path and a barren scree slope at the foot of large, unweathered rock formations. Continue along this clearly marked path towards Sirod. Cross the main road with care.

(6) At the first junction, turn right onto Rue des Chauffaux. Carry on to the end. Then take the path that branches off to the left and climbs up to a chapel. Walk past it and continue to your left. Pass through the ruins of a few houses and you’ll reach a junction.

(7) Look out for a lovely path leading down between hedges. Follow it.

(8) At the crossroads further down, turn left towards the Cascade des Tufs. Walk alongside the river and cross at the hydroelectric dam. Continue along the left bank and walk past the waterfalls. You’ll come to a tarmac forest track.

(9) Turn left. At the next junction, turn left again to go round the Côte Poire. Carry on until you reach a Fork in the road.

(10) Turn right, following the meadows. You’ll reach a hut (a hunting lodge?), walk past it and enter the woods, continuing along the lovely track that runs alongside the cliffs and overlooks the village of Syam.
When you reach the end of the well-surfaced track, follow the stonier path leading down to the left. Follow this path all the way down to reach a tarmac road.

(11) Cross this road and follow the ‘Pertes de l’Ain’ tourist trail on the right. Explore the whole site and cross the footbridge. Join the upper path, which is almost flat.

(12) Continue to the left for a panoramic view of the hydroelectric facilities. Then take the very wide path on the right and you’ll soon reach your car park (S/E).

Hello, we did this hike yesterday in the heat. The coolness of the undergrowth was therefore very welcome. It would be better to do the route in the other direction to finish with the more interesting places. Otherwise, it's a nice walk. We recommend it.

Thank you for this walk, which took in so many interesting spots. The Ain was flowing nicely this year!
We did the route in reverse so as not to end with the least interesting section: the stretch between 9 and 11. As a result, we climbed up the Commères section instead of walking down it. It’s more tiring but less tricky as the slope is steep. Less tricky, especially if the ground is wet.
We did it on a Wednesday, so it wasn’t too crowded

A lovely walk that takes you past the ‘Escalier des Coucous’ and the ‘Rocher des Commères’.
