Cycling loop between Guenrouët and the Bellion lock

The Isac Valley connects Guenrouët to the Vilaine. Small country roads and wide carriageways, then the towpath of the Nantes-Brest Canal, lead to the Bellion Lock, a nautical stop at the confluence of the canal and the Vilaine. The return journey is the same, via other equally pleasant routes. A bucolic atmosphere is guaranteed on this ride on the edge of the Pays de Redon.

Description of the route

Departure from the car park of the Guenrouet Tourist Office, Rue du Port, on the south bank of the Isac, at the foot of the Saint-Clair bridge.

(S/E) From the car park, head back up towards the road that crosses the bridge, then turn right when you reach it. The road climbs towards the village of Guenrouet, forming a wide bend.

(1) Turn right onto Rue de la Petite École, which leads to the church. Go around the church on the left to reach the main square of the village and the shops there.

(2) Leave the square via Rue de Coetmeuleuc, which is located on the western corner of the square, and follow this road until you cross the Guillet cider factory, which is located on both sides of the road.

(3) At the next roundabout, take the first exit on the right towards La Noë. This marks the start of the signposted cycle route, which passes through a very wooded and pleasant landscape. You will reach a crossroads at the edge of the woods.

(4) Turn right towards La Gicquelais, cross the hamlet, then continue straight ahead to climb a steep bend to the right and arrive at a crossroads.

(5) Leave the main road and take the road on the right towards La Touche Robin.

(6) Cross the village, continue straight ahead, then continue along the gravel path that extends the road.

(7) At the end of this straight section, you will come to a small road which you follow to the right.

(8) Cross the village of Cranda and continue straight ahead when you leave the village. Pass La Frusaye before reaching a crossroads that marks the entrance to the village of La Herviaie.

(9) Turn right and continue to Morissais.

(10) At the crossroads before reaching this hamlet, turn left towards La Bodiglaie. Cross it, keeping to the right at the crossroads, then find the D102 at the entrance to Le Cougou.

(11) Turn right to begin crossing the village. Pass the old restaurant and arrive at the chapel.

(12) Continue straight down the hill and reach the next crossroads.

(13) Turn right towards Launay, then right again at the next crossroads. Drive through Bleuben and slowly approach the banks of the Isac, further on, at a wooded area.

(14) Pass this spot and continue straight ahead along the edge of the marsh bordering the river.

(15) At La Herviaie du Clandre, take the time to venture into the marsh on the right before the bend before the village: the view of the marsh is beautiful and you can count the storks' nests on the electricity pylons. In the village, turn right to continue around the wetland.

(16) Turn right before Le Petit Val, pass the farmhouse and its pretty garden, then leave the edge of the marsh and climb the path that branches off to the left towards Le Chêne.

(17) Pass through the bottom of this village with its long rows of buildings and continue straight ahead. Shortly afterwards, leave the signposted cycle route on the left and go up the stony bend that branches off to the right. A little effort is required to tackle the slope, which is made all the steeper by the rough surface. Continue until you cross the D773.

(18) Cross this busy road carefully and immediately turn right onto the small road that runs alongside the departmental road. A final straight, shaded section leads to the Pont Miny bridge, which takes you to the other side of the river.

(19) First crossing of the Pont Miny, a stop for boaters on the Canal de Nantes à Brest. Turn left after the bridge to join the towpath. The route is easy and pleasant, interrupted only by the railway crossing (be careful, it is narrow and winding), and leads to the junction with the D124.

(20) Continue along the towpath. This is followed by two and a half kilometres of perfectly straight, boring road leading to Bellion, where the canal meets the Vilaine.

(21) This is a good place to stop, even though there are no facilities. Then return to the bridge over the canal and follow the D35. Cross over the railway line and follow this road to the Pâtis Saint-Joseph crossroads.

(22) Turn right, pass La Dairy Farm and La Présentais and reach Henrieux via a pleasant little road lined with farms and old houses.

(23) At Henrieux, leave the paved road and take a farm track that branches off to the right at the entrance to the hamlet. Follow this track until you come to a crossroads, which descends towards La Coquelinais.

(24) Turn right and continue down the slope until you reach the marshes. Climb up the opposite slope and reach the first crossroads.

(25) Turn right, pass the Landelle farm, then take the first left, then right fifty metres further on to finish climbing the hill.

(26) At Trouhel, turn left and follow the road straight ahead to Les Mortiers, then join the D124. Follow this road on the left to the Villeberte chapel.

(27) Opposite the chapel, take the road on the right, then at the next crossroads, go slightly up to the left, under Ballac, to join the farm track that branches off to the right. Follow this rollercoaster track until you come out onto the road that leads to the Hôtel Menant. Then descend to the right to rejoin Pont Miny.

(19) For this second passage, stay on the left, on the north bank of the canal, and follow the towpath.

(28) Below Barrisset, the woods that line the Isac river separate from the canal and the landscape opens up. It closes again shortly after the river and canal separate, which you can see on your right as you pass.

(29) From this point onwards, the canal and the Isac become one, so continue along the towpath.

(30) The Morissais boat stop (on the other bank) is marked by a few boats moored there.

(31) Pass in front of La Touche Robin to see the landscape close in again. The sharp bends that follow signal the end of the walk.

(32) When you reach Saint-Clair, leave the towpath and head left between the houses to come out onto the D2, just before it crosses the bridge. As you pass, take a last look at the river before turning right after the Relais Saint-Clair to return to the Tourist Office (S/E).

Notes

More than half of the route is on unpaved tracks or paths. Although the entire route is clean and easily passable, some sections are a little stony and require tyres suitable for this type of surface.

Refreshments are available at the start of the route in the village of Guenrouet, where there are several shops.

In season, at Pont Miny, La Paillotte is a pleasant spot by the canal where you can quench your thirst or grab a bite to eat. And what's more, you pass it twice.
