Loop around Saint-Julien-Chapteuil

A short, easy walk. Beautiful scenery throughout, and two pretty villages (Le Betz and Auteyrac) with beautifully restored houses. Also worth seeing is the Betz Observatory.

Description of the walk

Park in the square in front of the town hall in Saint-Julien-Chapteuil.

(S/E) Take the D28 towards Pertuis for about 100 metres, then turn right onto Rue du Ruisseau.

(1) Cross the Ruisseau du Fraise and follow it on your left until you reach the D15.

(2) Turn right and then left to cross at the pedestrian crossing, then follow Chemin de Chaize for about 1.5 km, continuing to follow the stream on your left. You will come to a fork in the road.

(3) Leave the edge of the stream, turn right twice, continue to the D150 and follow it to the left for about 100 m.

(4) Cross the road with caution. At the junction with the D49, take the road on the right, then almost immediately take the path on the left. Cross the road towards the village of Le Chevalert and continue straight ahead for about 800 m.

(5) At the crossroads, turn left towards Le Betz. The path becomes a small road in the village. Turn right onto the D49, and 300 m further on, turn right towards the Observatory (take a short detour to visit it and admire the view).

(6) Retrace your steps, then take the road furthest to the right (or thesecond on the right if you do not go all the way to the observatory). After 500 m, turn right, then cross the road at the next crossroads.

(7) Continue straight ahead on a road that leads to a quarry. Before a left turn, leave this road and take a stony path on the right that leads to the village of Auteyrac. Continue on the right, pass a block of letterboxes and stop to admire the bread oven.

(8) Take thefirst orsecond road on the left towards Saint-Julien-Chapteuil and join the D15.

(9) Follow it to the right towards the village centre and turn left to go around the Place du Marché.

(10) Continue along Montée de l'Église (worth a visit). To finish, you can go around the church on the right or left:
- either via a cobbled street, Côte Gelée, then Rue Chaussade to the town hall (route marked),
- or take the path through the meadows behind the church, which joins Chemin du Pendant, then Rue du Ruisseau.

(1) Follow the same route back to the Place de la Mairie (S/E).
