Circular route around Pontchâteau

A lovely ride through the countryside, with plenty of quiet country lanes and pretty paths, returning via the marshes. For cycling enthusiasts. Can also be done on foot, of course.
The route begins by following a few paths around the Coët-Roz site, the venue for the French, European and World Cyclo-cross Championships.

Description of the route

(S/E) The route starts from the car park on Allée du Brivet, opposite the Intermarché, to avoid having to park in the blue zone (except on Monday mornings, market day. Parking is available a little further on).

Follow the river, keeping it on your right. After passing under the ring road, take the path on the right.

(1) Cross under the railway line via the floating footbridge. Continue for 100 metres along the river, then head up the path on the left. Cross the alleyway and carry on, then head up to the left (it’s uphill – you are, after all, on the world cyclo-cross championship course). Follow this path to the wooden hall (part of the path isn’t shown on the map).

(2) Take the street on the left, then left again at the Croix de Coët Roz, cross the railway line and carry on to the stop sign. Cross over, carry on straight ahead and, at the next junction, turn right onto Rue de Rivolais.

(3) At the stop sign, turn right. At the end of this street, turn right. Go over the four-lane road and leave a road on your left.

(4) Turn left and head towards the Beaumard campsite.

(5) Carry on to Beaumard, then continue along the road branching off to the right and pass the farm buildings.

(6) At the Y-junction, follow signs for Berreau on the left, then take the first track on your left. At the next junction, turn right, then left at the end.

(7) Turn right, then left opposite La Moriçais. Carry on until you reach the four-lane road.

(8) Turn left to run alongside the dual carriageway and, as soon as possible, left again to cross it.

(9) Carry on to the right until just past the “Dom Julien” sign.

(10) Turn left towards La Maronnière and pass Le Guerveau.

(11) Turn left again. Pass through the pretty little hamlet of La Poivinerie (not signposted) and, a little further on, turn left to go round the Defay campsite.

(12) Head up to the right until you reach Route du Calvaire. Cross over to the opposite side and pass the dairy farms.

(13) Take the first path on your left. Follow the bend and, immediately afterwards, turn sharply right to continue along the path.

(14) Then follow the path that branches off to the left, right to the end. Turn right and cross the Buisson Rond, following the road that continues to the left.

(15) In Callac, on the road to Crossac, turn left, then immediately right. Continue along this small road, which curves to the left.

(16) At the junction, turn right, then head downhill to the right. Then turn left at the Fork in the road.

(17) Turn right, passing through Petit Coëdros and Clos de l’Air. At the next junction, turn left.

(18) Pass the wayside cross and leave the road to continue along the path in front of you. At the end, turn right and enter La Fenêtre. Take the first left, then immediately left onto the path and continue to the river.

(19) Cross the river and walk up the small street to the disused railway line. Follow the railway line, turning left, and enter the marshland.

(20) The ballast stones are a bit of a nuisance, but it doesn’t last long. Look up and follow the high-voltage power lines as they head off to the left.

(21) On the pylon, you’ll spot a stork’s nest box. If you’re there at the right time of year, you might see the whole family there. Immediately afterwards, cross the tracks and continue along the much more pleasant path. Carry on like this until you reach the sewage treatment works.

(22) Head down to the left along the fence to the river and cross it again. Carry on along this path to the right, passing under the railway line and then under the viaduct. At the end, cross the Lavoirs car park.

(23) Turn right and cross the river again. Pass under the railway line once more. You will arrive at Place Dominique David (the town hall square).

Carry on along this footbridge with the river on your left, then cross the river one last time via the footbridge to reach the car park (S/E).

Notes

The route begins with a short stretch through Coët-Roz Park, where the French, European and even World Cyclo-cross Championships are held.
A lovely route along small paths and quiet roads with little traffic. Ideal for cycling enthusiasts.

(19)Alternative route in the event of flooding: What a shame! Turn round and head back along the road you’ve just left. After “La Fenêtre”, carry on straight ahead. Continue on to the centre of Pontchâteau.

Worth a visit

You can take the opportunity to have a stroll in Coët-Roz Park. It’s also a lovely spot for a picnic. For mountain bikers, it’s brilliant! For joggers, it’s a proper challenge.

Actually, domapy, you’re absolutely right. Visorando’s aim is to get off the beaten track – in other words, away from signposted trails. Other organisations, such as tourist information centres, have made this their speciality and sell guidebooks featuring signposted trails. To each their own.

I don’t think Visorando is intended for marking out walks. So it’s only to be expected that this one isn’t listed there. All you need to do is load the walk and follow it. Perhaps you ‘missed’ a turn?

This cycle route around Pontchâteau – which is about twenty kilometres long – is not signposted at all, so we got lost after Le Berreau… Some basic signposting would be welcome; this is the local council’s responsibility, so please pass this on…
