A pleasant little walk through meadows and woods with, on a clear day, a view of the volcanic range.

Description of the walk

Between Le Mayet-de-Montagne and Saint-Clément, on the D7, turn at the sawmill towards Bercutat. Park at the three-way junction at Le Petit Pasquier.

(S/E) Take the road on the right towards Bercutat, passing through the hamlet on the right. The road turns into a dirt track that descends between two ponds. Walk along the left-hand pond. Turn right onto the road.

(1) A few dozen metres further on, just before a cross perched on a rock, take the path on the left. Go round the hamlet of Fumouse via the path on the left. On leaving the hamlet, continue along the road, keeping to the left. At Les Épingliers, cross a road.

(2) When you reach a cross-cutting dirt track, cross it and continue straight on along a grassy path (this path does not appear on all maps).

(3) At the hamlet of Le Chier, follow the road heading left. At the White Cross, continue left. Cross an old railway line, of which nothing remains, via a small bridge. The road turns into a dirt track. From there, it goes uphill.

(4) At the crossroads, turn right (leaving Le Mallot on your left). At the Black Cross, continue straight on. Stay on the main path. Enter the Bizin woods.

(5) Shortly after entering the woods, take a path on the left. Follow it to a crossroads at a place called La Liabot.

(6) Follow the path on the left which descends through a lovely beech wood, much of which is carpeted with blueberry bushes. Join a track suitable for vehicles.

(7) Follow it, keeping to the left. It turns into a tarmac road that leads back to the car park where you started (S/E).

Notes

Best done in dry weather, as some sections of this walk can easily become muddy.

Worth a visit

On a clear day, there are views of the volcanic range.
Blueberries in abundance in the Bizin woods (picking is regulated, please enquire).

On the way back, stop by the Maison de la Montagne in Le Mayet-de-Montagne to stock up on local produce.

A very beautiful route. A good, fairly steep and long climb. Sturdy walking shoes and walking poles are strongly recommended, as there are many sections with loose stones and a risk of slipping.

Please note! Between points 2 and 3: you cannot pass through here – the field is inaccessible. Go round to the left, and you can rejoin the path immediately after the woods, once you’ve gone under the bridge. Turn right and you’ll be back on the route.

Hello,
It is the description and the base map that should be followed, not the markings, signposts and other signs that appear from time to time.

Good evening, there are a lot of markings missing at the start – either they’re not there at all or they’ve been worn away. It might be a good idea to specify the type of marking on the route description – yellow, in this case – as there are other colours along the way that could cause confusion.
Kind regards, JP Fantin.

It was rather disappointing: for two-thirds of the walk, we were on logging tracks that were so wide (and very steep) that the forest seemed a long way off; we were certainly in the woods, but on a stony track in full sun, and ultimately far from the trees!
We didn’t really enjoy ourselves.
