Bibracte - Athez

First part of a three-day hike exploring the landscapes of the Southern Morvan. This first stage is long and difficult; it is possible to split it into two by staying overnight at “La Rivière” near Crot Morin. The Gorges de la Canche are a sensitive site classified as a Natura 2000 area; it is essential to preserve it and to be discreet. This magnificent site can only be accessed in good weather, never after a storm, snow or ice. A track allows you to bypass it if necessary.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Vers les sources du flottage

Description of the walk

The starting point is located at the Bibracte Museum, in the large car park

(S) Take the small road that climbs between the museum and the Gallic restaurant "Le Chaudron". Take the GR®13 marked path immediately to the right. Go round the back of the museum. Continue straight on, then turn right and join the D18 at L’Eschenault.

(1) Cross the road carefully, making a slight left/right turn. Cross the Eschenault and head up to the left, still following the GR®13. Turn right twice and continue to the village of Glux-en-Glenne, the highest village in Burgundy.

(2) Continue on and take the short detour to the left towards the pond and its view over the valley. Return to the road and continue to the left. Walk straight through the village, then keep left and pass the European Archaeological Centre (a large granite building). Take the GR® de Pays, which descends slightly to the right. When you reach the road again, turn left.

(3) At the Croix de Villechaise, take the road slightly to the left, then the track to the right and continue to the right before crossing the hamlet straight ahead, without leaving the GR® de Pays. The road turns into a track.

(4) When you reach La Planche, continue straight on, then take the path on the right leading to St-Prix.

(5) Continue and turn left onto the path. At the cross, turn left, pass in front of the church and continue straight on along the D 179 road. Take the small road that descends to the right. Then follow the small road that climbs to the left.

(6) At the Montcharmont cross, turn left. Stay on the GR® de Pays marked in red and yellow. Ignore the road on the left and carry on. Then turn left, cross a small road, ignore it and follow the path to the left to Crot Morin (accommodation at “La Rivière”). At the cross, leave the GR® de Pays and cross Crot Morin straight ahead, going uphill.

(7) Follow a path marked in yellow to the left and climb for 1 km to “La Croisette”.

(8) Join the GR®13. Take the road on the right. The path runs safely alongside it to the Barrage de la Canche.

(9) Take the path leading down opposite into the Gorges de la Canche. Please note: if the weather is bad, at the next junction, take the forest track straight ahead to avoid the gorges. Otherwise, follow the gorge path, keeping to the left as close as possible to the stream. Be careful, keep a low profile and pay particular attention to the environment. Walk past the power station. The path turns into a track before reaching a footbridge.

(10) Cross the footbridge to the left and climb up to the D978 road. Cross it to head almost straight ahead (be very careful). Climb up, take the path on the other side of the junction and turn right, following a small path that climbs.

(11) Pass the Fontaine Saint-Jean and continue straight on to Roussillon-en-Morvan (there is an inn in the village).

(12) Turn left onto Rue du Bourg then turn right onto Rue du Château. Pass the cemetery and continue to the end.

(13) Turn left, following the GR® Tour du Morvan. Turn right onto the road, then left and right again to go round Mont Robert. Continuing straight on, you’ll reach Athez, with the stopover lodge on the left (E).
