Traggette sheepfolds - Lake Bastani

From the Capanelle Refuge, on theGR®20, it takes about 30 minutes to reach the Traggette sheepfolds. This is followed by the climb to Bastani Lake, which peaks at an altitude of 2,089 metres opposite Monte Renoso (2,352 metres). Bastani Lake, located in Haute-Corse, is one of the highest lakes in Corsica. This magnificent glacial lake, frozen for seven months of the year, owes its beautiful emerald green colour to the presence of filamentous algae.

Description of the walk

Depart from the car park opposite the stopover lodge near the Capannelle Refuge. When you arrive, park along the road or in the car park if there is space.

(S/E) Continue along the road for a few metres, then turn left and cross the Tomba stream. Continue for a few more metres until you reach the start of a path on the left.

(1) At the signpost, follow theGR®20towards Col de Verde and make a round trip to Bergeries de Traggette.

(2) From Bergeries de Traggette, retrace your steps.

(1) Turn left (signposted Lac de Bastani - Monte Renoso) towards the south, heading for a ski lift dominated by an enormous black rock, Pietra Niella. Cairns mark the path.

(3) Stay on the path towards the Ravin de Pizzolo.

(4) Change direction, turning left; in any case, the two paths converge at the same point.

(5) You can stray slightly from the path to fill up with water at the De Pizzolo spring, the only water source before Lake Bastani.

(6) Turn right and stay on the path. Small grassy plateau ideal for a break.

(7) From Lake Bastani, return via the same path without going to and from the Traggette sheepfolds (S/E).

Hello Incantesimu
I have changed my assessment of the route's appeal: I was distinguishing between the path and its destination. While the end point is spectacular, I personally find that the approach is not exceptional because you are more preoccupied with watching your step given the nature of the terrain than with the landscape... For example, it is much less "rolling" than many sections of the GR...

I stand by my assessment of the difficulty. In the FFRANDONNEE practical guide to hiking ratings, level 3 technical difficulty is defined as: Route or section of route with at least one obstacle less than or equal to knee height. Foot placement must be adapted to the unevenness of the terrain. Footing should be placed on areas with the best grip.
That's level 3, right?
I know that "In Corsica, nothing is guaranteed and everything must be earned" because I live and hike there myself. But I sometimes see people venturing out in dangerous conditions, with little equipment, young children and insufficient water, etc., thinking that everything is within everyone's reach. I was applying the precautionary principle, you might say, and you would be right. The mountains must remain a place of enjoyment, but of sensible enjoyment...
Perhaps an additional level of difficulty should be added between "medium" and "difficult"?
Thank you for your feedback.

Good evening,
Sorry, but the comments about the appeal of the hiking route do not match what is written in the text. I quote: " The destination of the hike, Lake Bastiani, is truly beautiful, and happiness and wonder await you, etc., etc." Why, then, is the appeal of the hiking route rated as " average"? It's incomprehensible. Just look at the previous comments. As for the rating: "Moderate" difficulty, the hike is not that challenging in itself; there are much more difficult ones, and I know what I'm talking about given my age, but I'm still in good shape. In Corsica, nothing can be taken for granted and everything has to be earned. As already mentioned last year (14/08/2019), the departure point from the Cassacie bridge is a different route (longer), and at the risk of misleading some hikers, you have to stick to this route, otherwise you have to take another one, which actually starts from the Cassacie bridge. Regarding the comments!!!! I had already asked the moderator to ask hikers to justify what they decide to post online.

The destination of the hike, Lake Bastiani, is truly beautiful, offering happiness and wonder.
For the more adventurous, you can add the climb up to Renoso, which offers truly exceptional, breathtaking views, since the hard part is already behind you and there are only 250 metres of elevation gain left in a climb that is much less strenuous than the one you just completed.

Personally, I think that the "medium" difficulty rating may lead people to believe that many are capable of doing it, and I fear that this is not the case, especially for untrained walkers or families like the ones we saw there.
We found the climb to be 1. rather long (and we started very early!), 2. not very "rolling" as it was generally rocky, 3. poorly marked (a few vague purple markings and lots of cairns in all directions). In short, not very pleasant overall. As for the descent, it is just as challenging for the same reasons.
The "steps" are often higher than knee height, which for some people can be a real physical challenge.

In my opinion, the detour to the Traggette sheepfolds is of little interest: why not head to the Casaccie bridge on the D169 for the more adventurous?

Thank you for making all these beautiful routes available.

There are certainly several ways to reach Lake Bastani. But be careful if you choose to park at the Cassacie bridge, according to Copagama and a "shepherd", my route is no longer the same as the initial starting point. Everyone is free to choose their starting point. Personally, I've done both. If this is the case, you'll need to redraw the route from Cassacie Bridge so as not to mislead novice or experienced hikers.

Starting from Capannelle does indeed involve going back and forth to the Traggette sheepfolds, but that was my choice that day. On the other hand, if you start from Lake Nielluccio, the departure point is the Cassacie bridge. I have mapped out a route for this.

In my opinion, the AR to the Tragettes sheepfolds as described is not interesting, having tested it yesterday. If you fancy walking along part of the GR 20 trail through pine trees and scrubland (beautiful views though!), park at the Casaccie bridge on the D169 which goes up to the station and start your hike from there (advice from a shepherd I met).
It is also better to park your vehicle, if you are starting from the resort, in the upper car park (at the danger intersection sign, turn right). This avoids having to walk along a stony, steep and very slippery path for 100 metres, especially on the way back, and adds nothing to the route.
Don't hesitate to climb Monte Renoso, as the path is easy to follow and the view from this wide plateau is unique.

A beautiful hike to Lake Bastani (1,900 m), which is frozen for seven months of the year – yes, even in Corsica!

Great hike
The climb to La Croix is a little more difficult.
