Pozzi via the Lacs de Rina from Ghisoni

This is a magnificent hike that has never been done before, as there is a section that is not listed. The trail starts halfway to the Ghisoni ski resort via a shortcut that leads onto the famous GR®20. This route offers a wide variety of landscapes and vegetation, including fir and beech forests, scrubland, rocky areas, lakes, rivers, animals, sheepfolds and the famous pozzi, which are magnificent in this location. These are pools of water in the green grass that form natural basins, connected by small river veins in the grass. The outward journey is via the Lacs de Rina, and the return via the GR®20. There are a few tough, steep sections, but all in all, it's not a very difficult hike, and well worth the effort.

Description of the walk

Park at the car park halfway up the road to the Ghisoni ski resort. The car park is easy to find, as is the start of the trail just opposite, marked with a yellow "I Pozzi" sign.

(S/E) Take the path up on the right and join the GR®20.

(1) Turn left towards Les Pozzi. Reach a fork in the road.

(2) Turn right. The path is not very visible, but one or two cairns indicate the start. The path is not obvious, so don't hesitate to use a GPS, it's easier.

(3) Leave the forest here and continue to follow the cairns through the scrubland to reach Lac de Rina.

(4) From here, the section is not shown on any map. You need to climb to the Col de Pruno, which lies due south: follow the GPX track to reach the col, where you will find a clear trail.

(5) Take a slight left onto a track that descends towards the pozzi.

(6) Leave the trailhead on your left, which you will use on the return journey, and continue straight ahead to reach the northern end of the largest pozzi.

(7) Turn back.

(6) Bend right, ford the stream and reach the Pozzi sheepfolds.

(8) Keep to the left, walk alongside the sheepfolds and continue straight on.

(9) At this point, there is a fork that takes you down to another sheepfold. You can take a short diversions to get there, or avoid it by staying on the path to the left (choice of route). Join the GR®20.

(10) Follow it to the left and find the faint fork in the path you passed uphill.

(2) Continue straight ahead.

(1) Leave the GR®20 and take the path on the right leading directly to the car park (S/E).

Notes

On this walk, you will mainly follow the cairns when not on the GR®20, and the red and white markings when you are on the GR®20.

Just after the lakes, this is where you come to a section that is not marked on the maps, but which is doable and not very complicated despite the sometimes slightly awkward undergrowth. It is recommended that you follow the GPX and we have also placed new cairns to make the route easier.

You'll cross a number of waterholes on this walk, with varying degrees of density.

In May, bring good shoes, waterproof hiking boots at best, and two pairs of socks, just in case.

You will come across two sheepfolds along the way, which are occupied from mid-June to the end of September.

Bring a little wool and a wind and rain jacket, as the weather can be capricious in the Pozzi valley.

Worth a visit

You'll love the lakes, the breathtaking views of the mountains, the plain and the sea in places. The snow remains if you hike in May or early June.

The Pozzi are a miracle of nature and it's a joy to sit down for a picnic, and perhaps enjoy a siesta in the sun on the soft grass.

Due to bad weather, we only made it as far as Lake Rina and back.
In the forest, as soon as you leave the GR20, you need to pay attention to the cairns, but the trail is fairly well marked.
Afterwards, you come out into a magnificent setting of very wild lakes

Incredible hike in terms of scenery. From point 3 onwards, it's exceptional. You're completely alone until you reach the pozzi (don't hesitate to climb up to point 7 for a breathtaking view of the area – it's magical)
However, a few things to note:
- between points 2 and 3, it's really steep through the forest, but not that long. Just be patient and keep your balance 😅
- ABOVE ALL, don't set off without a GPS track because, despite the numerous cairns on the ascent and descent (well done to whoever designed the hike 🙏), you need to know if you're on the right track (on the descent from the Pozzi sheepfold, follow the yellow markings to the GR)
