Muttental Mining Circular Walk

Start: Park in front of the building at Alte Str. 31, 58452 Witten-Bommern.

(S/E) From the starting point, follow Alte Straße south-westwards to number 52. Then take the footpath on the right and follow the path into the wood. At the first fork in the wood, keep left and follow the path straight ahead along the edge of the wood until you reach Bockampstraße. Turn right here.

(1) Take the next opportunity to turn left back into the woods and follow the path through the woods until you reach Wacholderstraße. Here, turn left onto the Muttental Circular Trail M2. Follow the Muttental Circular Trail until you reach Kohlenstraße.

(2) Turn left here. You are now on the Ruhrhöhenweg. Before the house at Kohlenstraße 24, turn right onto Kohlseggenstraße and follow the Ruhrhöhenweg. Continue along this path until you reach the Muttenbach.

(3) Once you’ve crossed the stream, turn slightly right onto Fritz-Golte-Weg Witten into the woods. Keep following Fritz-Golte-Weg Witten until you reach Berghauser Straße.

(4) Turn left onto this road and follow it as far as number 15. Here, turn right onto the Muttental Rundweg M3 and follow it; the path soon turns left and then right.

(5) You’ll reach the Hardenstein castle ruins on the banks of the Ruhr. Once you’ve visited them, turn right onto Hardensteiner Weg. Cross the railway tracks on the left and follow the footpath and cycle path running parallel to the railway line.

(6) Once you reach the Nachtigall Colliery, you can visit the museum and the exhibition. There is also a café here where you can grab a bite to eat. Then keep to the right and follow Muttentalstraße.

(7) Turn left in front of the house at Muttentalstraße 25 and continue along the Westfalen Wanderweg. This will take you to Steinhausen Castle. There is an exhibition of sculptures in the car park here.

(8) At the car park at Steinhausen Castle, turn right onto the Muttental Circular Trail M2. At the junction with Fritz-Golte-Weg Witten, carry straight on and leave the Muttental Circular Trail M2.

(9) Turn right at Frielinghauser Str. 43 and, after passing house number 51, take the path on the left into the woods. Continue to follow the Muttental Circular Trail M2 until you reach Bockampstraße.

(10) After the house at Bockampstraße 7, turn left onto the forest path. At the next junction, turn left and take the footpath back onto Alte Straße.

(S/E) Here, turn left onto Alte Straße and walk back to the starting point at Alte Straße 31.

Visit the Nachtigall Colliery Industrial Museum and the ruins of Hardenstein Castle.

(6) There is a toilet and a café on the Nachtigall Colliery site where you can stop for a break.
