Car park between the stadium and the tennis courts, Rue de la Jacques.
(S/E) Opposite the Salle Jean Giono, turn left then take the tarmac road on the right and pass between the stadium on the left and the tennis courts on the right. Head straight on to the end of Avenue Marcel Pagnol and continue left until the next junction, at No. 480.
(1) Turn left onto Chemin de la Gentone and continue to the T-junction.
(2) Follow the tarmac road to the right (Chemin des Barquets), which passes in front of the 11th-century Chapelle des Bas Barquets, and continue to No. 1213.
(3) At the wooden sign for the “Chapelle des Bas Barquets”, turn left onto Chemin du Lèbre and walk past truffle oaks and fields before entering the woods at a small sarcophagus-shaped structure. This is a 19th-century pumping station, one of several you will encounter along the route.
(4) After just over a kilometre, follow the sign for Pont du Martinet on the right to head downhill and take a closer look at this interesting aqueduct dating from 1852. Then rejoin the Chemin du Lèbre.
A little further on, leave the path ahead and go down the wooden steps on the right.
Cross the ford and keep to the right to rejoin the small tarmac road, then turn left above the pumping station. Yellow markings on a large tree. Continue round a field of lavender.
(5) Pass in front of a first renovated farmhouse, follow the path which makes a very sharp Z-turn towards the Sainte-Chande farm. After the “Sainte-Chande” sign, continue along the path which climbs gently, keeping an eye out for the intermittent yellow markings.
(6) Pass two paths branching off to the left, then take the one marked with a yellow sign. It is a stony, root-covered path that climbs steeply to the left. At the top, continue straight ahead at the Fork in the road to follow mountain bike trail No. 6.
At the wooden sign for “Bassin des Druides”, leave the mountain bike trail to explore the Bassin des Druides, a Neolithic site, about 50 m further on to the left. Magnificent views.
(7) Look for the basin amongst the rocks overlooking the valley, following the edge to the left.
Return to the path on the left. Atthe second “Bassin des Druides” sign (signposted for those walking the route in the opposite direction), keep left and head down until you rejoin the main path. Then turn right.
(8) After about 400 m, the remains of an old quarry appear, with traces of a troglodyte dwelling on the left. Don’t hesitate to climb up onto the jagged rocks: a superb view of Mont Ventoux is guaranteed.
Then follow the path back to where it joins a wider one. A little further on, look out for a structure shaped like a large paving stone on the right. This is an old pumping station.
Further on, still on the right, a stream seems to emerge from the ground, like a resurgence (drainage channel), and flows towards the riverbed a little further down in the woods.
After about fifteen minutes, you’ll come to the Notre-Dame des Barquets Chapel. Head right, returning to the road you took on the way there.
(2) At the junction with Chemin de la Gentone, continue straight on along Chemin des Barquets.
At the next junction, turn left onto the D 481, which takes you back to the village of Montségur.
Follow Avenue de Saint-Jean. Pass in front of the 18th-century Saint-Jean Chapel.
At the roundabout, continue straight on along Avenue Joseph Maugard until you reach a sharp bend.
(9) Then head up to the right towards the medieval castle, passing the fountain.
Keep to the right and head for the flat area from where you can approach the Arbre de Mai. Then continue the climb past the Maison Commune (water point) towards the chapel to reach the esplanade where the orientation table is located. 360° panoramic view of Mont Ventoux, the Dentelles de Montmirail, La Lance, Grignan Castle, the Chamaret Tower...
(10) Descending the stone steps below the terrace at the Maison Commune, you reach the rampart walk on the left. However, the steps also lead down to the right, allowing you to walk beneath the ramparts and catch a glimpse of the old village.
Then head back out and walk down towards the fountain.
(9) To return to the car park, continue straight ahead and turn left after the roundabout to rejoin Rue de la Jacque and walk past the village hall (S/E).
