Description of the walk

(S) From the refuge, join theGRP®® du Tour de la Font Sancte at the crossroads on the edge of the Rif Bel.

(1) Take the correct path that runs along the right bank of the torrent.
At an altitude of 2,100 metres, join a path that branches off to the left. This is the path that leads to the summit of Font Sancte.
(2) Keep right on theGRP®® and begin a long climb up the Selette valley, reaching the Col des Houerts via a series of tight hairpin bends.

(3) Take the right-hand path that leads to the Pointe d'Escreins.

(4) Return to the pass.

(3) Start the long descent on the left into the Vallon des Houerts.
Pass close to the Lac Vert and Lac Bleu lakes and take a detour here for a break, for example.

(5) Continue the descent, walk alongside the Cabane des Houerts and head south to reach the forest and then the road along the Ubaye.

(6) Here, there are two options, according to a message from a hiker:
- turn right and follow the yellow and red GRP® trail, follow the right bank of the Ubaye to rejoin the road just before the village of La Barge,
- turn left onto the road, which is the route shown on the map, taking care of the heavy traffic in summer, and join the crossroads just before the village of La Barge.

(7) Continue along the road, remaining vigilant, to reach the village of Maljasset (E), which is today's destination.

Notes

There is water on the pass, but it is from the streams.
Caution: the route on the Maljasset D25 road is tedious and dangerous. There is a lot of traffic in summer, so be careful. There is no alternative route, so take heart, it takes about an hour but you will be rewarded at the lodges.

Worth a visit

(4) Pointe d'Escreins: the view of the summit of Font Sancte is particularly pleasant.
(6) You can take a detour via Fouillouse, a small village at the foot of Chambeyron, which can be reached via a remarkable bridge that is well worth a visit.

Hello and thank you very much for your message regarding this stage between Basse-Rua and Maljasset.
The route I described in 2014 has obviously undergone some changes, and thank you for pointing out that there is now a marked trail along the right bank of the Ubaye, which is, of course, an improvement on the monotonous route along the road. I will mention this in my description so that future users can make the right choice.
You also note that this circuit does not present any technical difficulties and that you do not understand the rating of Very Difficult. I agree, but I mentioned this rating not to indicate any such difficulty, but to point out that this stage, which is 18 km long with 1,400 m of elevation gain and 1,300 m of elevation loss, is part of a 3-day Tour de la Font Sancte itinerary, which you mention. These simple figures show that this stage should not be underestimated and that the rating of Very Difficult is undoubtedly an important warning for hikers who are not used to long-distance hiking.
We wish you many more great hikes.
Have a great day!

Very beautiful route. I've done it twice: in 2021 from Basse Rua to Maljasset and in 2025 in the other direction.
I decided not to climb to the Pointe d'Escreins because of the weather (risk of rain).

I recommend doing it from Maljasset to Basse Rua, as this allows you to do the tough part (on the road) at the beginning and warm up before the big climb.

two reservations about the description:
-On the section between point 6 and Maljasset, there is a path (well marked) for half the distance, between point 6 and just before La Barge. The road is only mandatory after that (for 2 km).
-Having done the Font Sancte circuit in both directions, I don't understand why this stage is classified as "very difficult" as it doesn't present any technical difficulties. In comparison, the Ceillac - Basse Rua stage is more challenging, although slightly shorter, and yet it is only classified as "difficult".

The Vallon des Houerts is a thing of beauty, with around forty ibex grazing peacefully!

A beautiful hike from Basse Rua to the Pointe d'Escreins and back. The trail is well marked. The forest section allows for a gentle start. The most difficult and steepest part is below the Col des Houerts, where the path winds up steep, rain-ravaged slopes covered in earth and stones.
There is a beautiful view from the Pointe d'Escreins, with the added bonus of a herd of ibex on the snow-covered patches of the Vallon des Houerts.
Descend via the same route to the Basse Rua car park.
