Balcons de l’Ouvèze, right bank, from Coux to Le Pouzin

A superb walk from Coux to Le Pouzin, passing through the terraces overlooking the Ouvèze valley on the right bank – the Plateau des Gras. A short stretch of tarmac towards the middle of the walk, but nothing too troublesome.

(!) You’ll need two cars: leave one in Le Pouzin for the return journey and drive to the Coux cemetery in the second car – it’s about a 15-minute drive.

Description of the walk

If arriving via the D104, cross the small bridge over the Ouvèze to reach Coux. Turn left towards the cemetery, walk for about 400 m and park at the cemetery.

(S) Walk alongside the cemetery along the small path that skirts it on the left.

(1) When you reach the cross, take the path that climbs up to the right.

(2) At the top, after the steep climb, turn left onto the ridge path.

(3) At Fontaine Merveilleuse, take the path on the left towards Chomérac / Les Bayles, continue along the main path and you’ll come to a four-way junction.

(4) Turn right and walk just over 100 m until you reach a fork.

(5) Turn left, heading towards Flaviac for 2.7 km. Carry on straight ahead, joining a track (Chemin de Mournet), then a road, and arrive at the first houses

(6) At the ‘No vehicles over 19 tonnes’ sign, turn left onto Chemin de la Gibecière and arrive at a four-way junction in Sabatas.

(7) After the low wall, do not take the dead-end road, but first turn left then right and continue for just over 200 m until you reach another four-way junction.

(8) Turn left, heading north, onto Chemin des Genets, staying on the tarmac.

(9) You can take the small path on the right to pass close to the ruins, or stay on the main path. These two paths join up a little further on. Carry on straight ahead for 1.5 km until you reach a fork.

(10) At the Chomérac shooting range plain, carry straight on along the track which, further on, turns right for 80 m before another right-hand bend.

(11) At Les Auches, at this right-hand bend, leave the track and turn left towards Flaviac; then, 20 m further on, at the Y-junction, take the path that climbs to the right in the same direction.

(12) Head left to enjoy the view over the Ouvèze and continue along the path which, further on, descends to the right, south-east, until you reach a fork.

(13) Turn left until you reach the Route des Grads.

(14) Follow it to the left, heading due north, until you reach a road junction.

(15) Leave the road and take the path on the right until you reach a fork.

(16) Turn right onto a small footpath which rejoins the main path further on.

(17) Cross it and continue straight ahead, joining a track to follow on the left until you reach a sharp bend to the right.

(18) Leave the track and take the small path to the left, heading north towards Le Pouzin (3.2 km).

(19) Another viewpoint over the Ouvèze Valley and the Rhône Valley. Turn right, south-east, pass under a power line and, 300 m further on, reach a fork in the path.

(20) Continue to the right towards Le Pouzin for200 m.

(21) Go through the small gate, then continue along the electric fence; there may be black pigs in the enclosure on the right.

(22) Continue along the fence.

(23) The descent begins, heading due south; it is quite steep in places, though not dangerous. You’ll reach the GR®.

(24) Turn left onto it, heading towards Le Pouzin, and follow it to the banks of the Ouvèze.

(25) Cross the footbridge, turn left and follow the Ouvèze to reach the car park (S/E).

very beautiful hike with lots of off-trail walking and very little road walking. The walking time is slightly overestimated. Best done in dry weather. Difficult hike
