Description of the walk

Departure from the Démineurs car park at the Col du Ballon d'Alsace on the D465.

The hike is marked with a yellow disc.

(S/E) From the car park, cross the road and climb the discovery trail towards the summit.

(1) After passing the statue of Joan of Arc (beautiful view of the Moselle valley), continue right on the discovery trail (extensive view of the Vosges ridges). It runs along the edge of the steep side of the summit.

(2) From the orientation table: immense circular panorama of the Alsace plain to the Jura mountains and the peaks of the Swiss Alps.
Return to the statue of the Virgin Mary, then descend to the farmhouse inn.

(3) Continue along the thatched roof, cross it completely and climb the path towards a grove at the top of the Mannheimer ski slope, then descend it. At the bottom on the left: the Trou de la Chaudière, with a beautiful view of the summit of the Ballon and the Interalfeld glacial cirque. At the foot of the ski lift, turn right.

(4) The route crosses the D465 in front of the La Chaumière restaurant. Opposite, a path descends steeply. Follow it for about 100 metres, then turn right. The path, which is fairly flat at first, descends and joins a forest track, which you must cross.
Continue downhill on a stony path, which leads to the Étang du Petit-Haut.

(4) Follow the dyke, then turn left and descend along the Savoureuse river via the waterfall trail (Rummel viewpoint).

(6) Turn right when you reach the forest path and continue to the Étang des Roseaux

(7) Follow the dyke and continue along the forest path until the next fork.

(8) Turn left, pass the ridge and descend to the Refuge de la Grande-Goutte (open, unmanned),

(9) From there, climb back up until you reach the Grande trails.GR®7andGR®59hike and return to the Démineurs car park (S/E).

Notes

Departure: Ballon d'Alsace, 28 km north of Belfort via the D465; 22 km from Masevaux via the D466. Parking des Démineurs.

Visorando was provided with information by Mr Chevalley, a volunteer member of Balisage90, based on brochures published by the Belfort Departmental Council.

The hike is marked with a yellow disc.

After the Étang des Roseaux, the circuit crosses the Ballons Comtois nature reserve. Dogs are not allowed, even on a leash.

This route passes through a protected area, which may be subject to special regulations:

Worth a visit

The Ballon d'Alsace, an exceptional natural site.
Located in the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park, it is listed as a protected site, guaranteeing unique environmental protection.
The flora and fauna are protected by the Ballons Comtois nature reserve and its Natura 2000 classification. You may even spot a chamois or a capercaillie! The summit discovery trail offers exceptional views of the valleys, the Vosges ridges and even the Alps on a clear day!

A monumental history.
Man has left his mark on the Ballon d'Alsace throughout history, with a statue of the Virgin Mary in 1860 and another of Joan of Arc in 1909 (symbolising France's attachment to Alsace), the trenches still visible from the First World War and the numerous boundary markers indicating the former border between France and Germany.
Or by the Deminers' Monument: in 1945, thousands of volunteers and prisoners of war took part in clearing the Ballon d'Alsace of mines. Erected in 1952, the monument bears witness to the sacrifice of 600 deminers.

Two magnificent lakes.
The gateway to the Ballons Comtois nature reserve, the Petit-Haut pond was built in the 19th century to compensate for the low water levels of the Savoureuse river and ensure the smooth running of the valley's textile industries and sawmills. On the northern bank, a young sphagnum bog is currently developing, which could evolve into a peat bog.

A little further on, the Étang des Roseaux had the same purpose in the past as the Petit Haut.

A lovely walk at Ballon d'Alsace, no particular difficulties, beautiful ponds and stunning views.
Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed in the Ballons Comtois nature reserve, which is a shame.

Superb walk.
The climb back up is very easy with plenty of breaks. We enjoyed stopping at the Grande Goutte refuge.
Thank you to the Tourist Office for recommending this hike.

A beautiful hike in good weather. Not many people in the morning. Very well marked route. You could do it in the opposite direction to the description if you prefer climbing the rocky slope alongside the waterfalls rather than descending it.

This hike is very beautiful from the start to number 4, but then personally I find it too much in the woods, and the climb back up is a bit tedious.

A very beautiful hike done in the opposite direction. The climb among the rocks is easier this way, and the numerous waterfalls are much more visible after heavy rains. There are many places to picnic.

A very beautiful hike, done for the second time in the opposite direction to the description. We preferred to climb up the rocky path rather than descend it. After several weeks of rain, the path remains passable, although wet, and the waterfalls are much more visible in this direction
