The walk starts at the Démineurs car park at the Col du Ballon d’Alsace on the D465.
The walk is signposted with a Yellow Disc.
(Start/Finish) From the car park, cross the road and follow the nature trail up towards the summit.
(1) After passing the statue of Joan of Arc (a lovely viewpoint over the Moselle valley), continue to the right along the nature trail (extensive view over the Vosges ridges). It runs along the edge of the steep side of the summit.
(2) From the orientation table: a vast panoramic view stretching from the Alsace plain to the Jura Mountains and the peaks of the Swiss Alps.
Return to the statue of the Virgin Mary, then descend from there to the farmhouse inn.
(3) Continue along the scree slope, cross it completely and head back up the path towards a copse at the top of the Mannheimer ski run, then descend it. At the bottom on the left: the Trou de la Chaudière, with a beautiful view of the Ballon summit and the Interalfeld glacial cirque. At the foot of the ski lift, turn right.
(4) The route crosses the D465 in front of the restaurant La Chaumière. Opposite, a path descends steeply. Follow it for about a hundred metres, then turn right. The path, which is fairly flat at first, descends again and joins a forest track which you must cross.
Continue the descent along a stony path; this leads to the Étang du Petit-Haut.
(4) Walk along the embankment, then turn left and head down alongside the Savoureuse via the waterfall path (Rummel viewpoint).
(6) Turn right when you reach the forest track, and carry on to the Étang des Roseaux,
(7) Follow the embankment and carry on along the forest track until the next junction.
(8) Turn left, cross the ridge and descend to the Refuge de la Grande-Goutte (open, unstaffed),
(9) From there, head back up until you rejoin the Grande hiking trailsGR®®7andGR®®59and reach the Démineurs car park (start/end).
