Ayen in days gone by

The original village and its castle.
This route leads to the hamlet of Ayen Bas, the original settlement known in the 12th century as ‘Ayen l’Église’. Remnants of this rich past include the Château de la Chabroulie and the Razat manor house. Imagine, too, walking up the nave of the Romanesque church, demolished at the end of the 19th century, whose architraves, modillions and paintings from the main door were incorporated into the construction of the present-day church in Ayen.

Description of the walk

Parking at the far end of the mini-market car park.
(S/E) Head towards the walnut grove. Turn right onto the small path along the flower-covered embankment, then head downhill to the left. At the road, turn left, walk past the Fond du Jar washhouse and its carved fountain, and continue downhill to the Place d’Ayen Bas. A short break is in order.

(1) Walk between the cross and the drainage channel towards the Château de la Chabroulie, then continue straight ahead along the grassy path. At the second junction, turn left and carry on straight ahead.
At the first junction, turn slightly to the right. At the second junction, go straight on to the road, then turn left to the crossroads.

(2) Go down the few steps on the left to the Grande Font washhouse, walk round it and climb the wooden-step staircase opposite for 25 metres.
Take the grassy path on the left, walk past the Pissol washhouses, then continue uphill to Rue du Pissol. Carry on to the left, then turn right onto Rue de l’Ancienne Gare, walking alongside the church wall. At the stop sign, take the street on the left (Rue des Écoles), which will take you back to the mini-market car park (S/E).
