Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the top of the village of Saint-Léger-les-Mélèzes on the road to Ancelle, near the ski slopes.

(S/E) Leave the car park by crossing the pedestrian crossing, turn right then immediately left onto a small, gently sloping road until you reach a wooden cross dating from 2019. To the left of this cross, follow a small, flat road heading south-west. Continue to the end of the tarmac and then take the dirt track to the left of the electricity substation. Stay on this dirt track until you reach the “Le Pountet” information point.

Leave the road on your right and take an unmarked path that climbs quite steeply into the forest. Cut across the tarmac road and continue along the path until you reach a plateau.

(1) Ignore the path on the right and continue straight on until you reach a stony track. Turn sharply right onto this new track, cross the tarmac D13 road and then, immediately afterwards, take a path on the left until you reach an old cross in the Ancelle plain.

(2) Do not return to the D13 but head down the stony road opposite towards the village of Ancelle. Cross theGR®50and continue until you reach the Fouent Boula farm crossroads.

(3) Take the dirt track on the right, passing between the two buildings. You will soon reach the crossroads at the Sarret farms. Turn left and walk past the cemetery. Enter the village of Ancelle and continue to the crossroads with a fountain.

(4) Turn left onto the main road, skirting the village centre to the north until you reach the D13. Follow it for about 50 metres to the right , taking care.

(5) Turn left to leave the village onto a small dirt track which quickly loses its tarmac and climbs towards Les Cousteilles. Turn left at the next crossroads, staying on the road which zigzags and continues its slow ascent. Join a barely marked path running perpendicular to the road.

(6) Take it to the left. Reach the telecommunications mast and rejoin a forest track. Stay on this track heading due north on a gentle descent until you reach theGR®50. Follow it downhill for 50 m and leave it, continuing straight on through a larch forest. Reach a crossroads at the edge of the forest.

(7) Turn left. Ignore a wide path on the left and continue downhill until you reach a cross. Turn right and begin the descent towards the village of Saint-Léger.

(8) Leave the path on the right and follow the winding track through the forest. Take care: the descent is very steep for 200 m until you reach the top of the ski slopes at the resort’s base. Turn left and follow the edge of the forest. Continue the descent to the tarmac road, then turn right to return to the car park at the top of the village (S/E).

We took the hike in the opposite direction of the circuit to have the elevation gain at the start of the walk, but there is a lack of signage. A pleasant walk with a beautiful view of the wooden roof tile plain.

A relatively easy hike, except for the section from point 6 to the mast (quite steep) and the descent towards point 8 (quite steep for over 200 metres)

I must point out that just before Ancelle, after crossing the road, it isn’t clearly signposted enough that you need to turn left immediately onto a path that runs alongside the road at first. I went straight on and then had to turn back.

I found the walk rather unremarkable, though there are lovely views of the Ancel plain and a glimpse of farming in the mid-mountain region.
The walk description is generally accurate EXCEPT for sections 5–6. It’s difficult to find point 6; you tend to turn left too early and end up in the middle of the fields. After unsuccessfully retracing our steps, we ended up cutting across some steep slopes and heading straight for the communications mast. So be more careful than we were; follow the altimeter and compass to find the start of this path, which is at point 6.
Otherwise, all is well. Best avoided on very hot days.
