Around Giromagny Fort, western route

After a circular walk around the fort’s moats and perhaps a visit to the fort itself, a gentle descent through the shade follows the route of the access road that once led to the fort, winding through the woodland. The return journey along the bottom of the valley beside the Ruisseau Le Gombois offers the chance to enjoy the cool, refreshing air to the full.

Description of the walk

Head to Giromagny, Territoire de Belfort. Park in the cemetery car park, Route de Lure.

(S/E) Head due south along the small access road to the fort, following the red-and-white Red Rectangle markings ofthe GR®®5E2and GRE5, which are soon joined by a Red Ring. Enter the forest and you will soon reach a Y-shaped junction.

(1) Turn left onto the wide track, following the Red Ring markings. Leave this at the next junction to take the ascending path, still marked with a Red Ring. Reach the edge of the fort’s moat.

(2) Turn left to walk around the fort in a clockwise direction. You’ll reach the fort’s car park.

(3) Turn left and follow the small road as it descends gently. Stay on this road until you reach the ponds, where you will find a signpost with numerous information boards.

(4) Leave theGR®® and immediately turn right onto the path, marked with a Red Triangle, which runs alongside the meadows bordering the stream known as the Gambois, which sometimes also follows the path. You will reach the Fontaine aux Loups junction.

(5) Continue for a few dozen metres until you reach another crossroads.

(6) Turn right towards Giromagny, following the Green Ring markings. After a steep climb up a path eroded by water, you will reach the crossroads you passed on the way out.

(1) Turn left and follow the route taken on the way out in the opposite direction to return to the Giromany car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

Between (2) and (3) see:
- at the first right-hand bend, you will notice the double caponier that protected the northern and eastern moats,
- at the second corner, head slightly down to the left to go round an old building which, in peacetime, served as barracks. Head back up to the edge of the moat to reach the fort entrance. A few goats will greet you as you pass, helping to maintain the grounds in an eco-friendly way, and a beautiful view opens up over the Salbert and Belfort.
To visit the fort, see the website
Between (3) and (4), this access route, specially designed to facilitate access to the fort, was used to supply it with materials during its construction and later for the delivery of provisions and ammunition. After the first sharp right-hand bend, you will notice the remains of former barracks. As you emerge from the woods, you will see a few ponds, the first of countless others in this area.
50 m away, behind the cemetery, lies the ‘Grosse Roche’, a Mesolithic site.
Mines Trail, 7.5 km. (Starting point: Place Général de Gaulle).

A lovely walk, with three-quarters of the path in the shade. Very pleasant in hot weather.
The path is in good condition.

A pleasant, green trail, enjoyed in August under blue skies and a temperature of 22 degrees. We encountered a few other hikers. No difficulty... perhaps the last kilometre of uphill walking may tire out those who are not very fit. We were a group of four people and five dogs, and we had a wonderful time on this hike
