Around the Hautes Rivières and Nohan sur Semoy

This route, located at the beginning of the French Semoy Valley, will give you access to four viewpoints that will allow you to discover Les Hautes Rivières, Nohan and the Crête du Château de Linchamp from different angles. It will give you the opportunity to admire a landscape shaped by the river and its tributaries.

Description of the walk

Departure from the former school in Sorendal, in the commune of Hautes Rivières.

10 May 2018: The GR®16 and GR®12C routes have recently been modified by the FFRP to form a single GR® route in this hiking area.

The route follows some sections of marked trails (PR® and GR®) but is not marked in its entirety.

(S/E) With your back to the old school, take Rue du Falligeois. Shortly after the last house, take the path on the right, then immediately left. The trail climbs steeply, then joins a tarmac road. This is part of the Transemoisienne. Follow it towards Les Hautes Rivières until you reach the top of Rue du Commodo, about a hundred metres after a barrier.

(1) Do not go down this street, but turn right to climb eastwards before continuing left towards the north (yellow markings). The path climbs up to Roche Margot.

(2) Turn left to reach the table and viewpoint overlooking the village of Hautes Rivières. After the viewpoint, return to the original path and turn left. The path descends slightly, then veers left to begin a steep descent before turning left again. Continue to a crossroads near the cemetery.

(3) Descend to the right, pass by the cemetery and join the access road to it. Turn right and continue in the same direction until you reach the Linchamps road (D13).

(4) Cross it carefully and take Rue du Petit Ohan opposite. At the end of this street, turn right, then immediately left and finally right again. The GR® trail, which follows the Transemoisienne, climbs gently towards the ridge of Château de Linchamps. Before the top of the climb, you will arrive at La Voye à l'Âne (signpost).

(5) Turn right towards La Dauphinée and continue to a crossroads.

(6) Turn left onto a forest road towards Champ Bernard, where you will find a table and shelter for a short break. Continue along the tarmac road for 150 metres, then turn left and follow the GR® to the Liris viewpoint, which offers beautiful views of Nohan.

(7) Retrace your steps for about 100 metres and take the first path on the left, then immediately turn left again. The path descends steeply and joins the Ruisseau du Nantanru, a tributary of the Semoy, and follows the right bank of the stream. As you approach the confluence with the Semoy, keep to the left to reach the confluence of the stream with the Semoy.

(8) Head left onto the Transsemoisienne and take the first path on the right to reach the Pont de Nohan.

(9) After crossing the bridge, go through the barrier on the left and climb up the embankment on the right. Follow the path to the old Chemin de Thilay in Nohan.

(10) Turn right, pass a path on the right (towards Naux) and reach a crossroads (elevation 223).

(11) Go up to the left on the path that joins a high-voltage power line and runs alongside it. Continue to the Chemin de Thilay in Robessart, located at the top of the climb before a rocky passage.

(12) Take the small path to the top of the Dames de Semoy (lovely view of Nohan).

(13) Turn right without losing altitude onto a small path that leads to a gas line. Follow the path on the left that runs alongside the gas line, pass the paragliding launch area and then a telecommunications pylon. Next, follow a steep descent to reach the Hatrelle crossroads.

(14) Follow the GR® trail to the right, cross a road (D13) and continue straight ahead on the GR® trail until you reach Rue de la Semoy in Failloué.

(15) Turn right onto this street, then left to cross the bridge over the Semoy. Join Rue de l'Industrie and follow it to the right, then turn left onto Rue de l'École, the former Sorendal school (S/E).

Notes

25 October 2025: route revised and corrected to compensate for the closure of the Naux footbridge.

Halfway along the route, the clearing of the former Maison Forestière du Champ Bernard, located in the middle of the route, will allow you to take a break and offer you a nice shelter.

La Forge bar-restaurant in Naux, 600 m off the route (11).

Worth a visit

(6) The La Dauphiné point on the route is 250 m from the old village of La Dauphiné, some remains of which are still visible. To reach this former village of farmers and cabinetmakers, take the path heading east.

(14) At La Hatrelle, you can make a round trip to the Croix de l'Enfer viewpoint (500 m round trip). There is a lovely view of the Hautes Rivières and La Roche Margot.

(5) At this point on the route, the site of the former Château de Linchamps is nearby and is worth a short detour.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

A beautiful and very solitary walk. Unfortunately, in the height of summer, the views are obscured by foliage. This hike is best repeated in autumn or spring.

Hello,

Very beautiful hikes, with pleasant trails and magnificent views.
The description is not always very clear, with several points of uncertainty due to unmarked trails, which could lead to mistakes. Fortunately, we had the GPS track.
Point 7: Quite a few trees were blocking the path for about ten metres, forcing us to take a slightly difficult route through the woods.
Strangely, according to the GPS, we covered 19 km², whereas we usually match the advertised distance and did not get lost. There were just a few viewpoints here and there, but that does not justify the 3 km difference.
The only downside is that at the start of the hike for about 5 km and at the end for about 2 km, you can hear the deafening and unpleasant noise of the factories, a repetitive sound (bang bang bang) echoing through the valley, which makes you forget that you're in the forest. I would therefore recommend doing this hike on a public holiday or at the weekend.
Thank you for this lovely hike.

A very beautiful hike with many interesting viewpoints. Accurate description. The trails are accessible to most people. One small downside: I will do this hike again in the spring, but not on a Sunday, as the Semoy is obviously very popular with motorcyclists and there is often background noise from the bikes.

Hello,

We did the hike on 17/09/2017. We didn't take the GPS track. But we did the hike with a GPS watch and it showed us an elevation gain of 736m, not 586m.

I would just like to clarify the start: "The trail climbs steeply and then joins a tarmac road. This is part of the Transemoisienne trail: follow it to the top of Rue du Commodo, about a hundred metres after the barrier."
When you reach the Transemoisienne, it should be noted that you need to descend towards Les Hautes Rivières.

We noticed that logging was in progress between Point 5 and Point 6 for about 1.5 km. We had to walk under the pine trees because there were very large ruts.
I recommend waiting a while before doing this hike to avoid this mishap.

Otherwise, it is a very beautiful hike to discover the forest with beautiful views.

Enjoy your hike!

My wife and I were very satisfied with this route, but we would like to make a few suggestions:
- As the Transemoisienne is paved, there may be some confusion at the beginning of the description with "to the top of Rue du Commodo" because when you cross a barrier, you might think that the sunken path on the right is the one to take. It should be specified after "Commodo" that it is "located 100 m beyond the barrier".
- At point 4, it may be advisable to continue a few hundred metres along the Transemoisienne to climb up to Linchamps Castle and the Fileuse viewpoint, which is well worth the effort.
-You could start from Naux, as we did, as it is easy to park near the footbridge.
