Around Val-Saint-Père, following the mouth of the Sélune

How lovely it is to walk on a carpet of greenery known locally as the ‘Herbus’ – meadows that are submerged at spring tides, giving the grass a salty flavour, which is essential fodder for the sheep! What’s more, after passing through the charming village of Val-Saint-Père, the eye is treated to the majestic sight of Mont-Saint-Michel, which rises to the west between the Pointe du Grouin du Sud on the right and the Pointe de Roche Torin on the left.

Description of the walk

Parking is available near the hotel-restaurant “Les treize assiettes”, on the right-hand side heading towards Montaubault.

(S/E) Cross the railway line, then, once you reach Argennes, turn left towards the banks of the Sélune.

Red and white markings forthe GR®22(GRE5)

(1) Turn right to follow the river, crossing the grassy areas.

(2) When the path widens, do not take the footbridge on the left made of fallen electricity poles, but carry on straight ahead towards the wooden gate. Continue along the road as it extends and, at the three-way junction, take the left-hand path. Go through a small gate (make sure to close it properly) and return to the grassy areas.

(3) Cross the footbridge over the Ruisseau du Moulinet.

When you reach a road, turn right onto it. At the crossroads, first turn left then right to continue straight ahead.

(4) Before a large cattle shed, follow the road to the left towards Val-Saint-Père. Pass through Chalengé and then Le Chauchais.

(5) On Rue des Prés, turn right onto a stony path lined with trees. Follow it as it bends to the left and reach Rue des Écoles. Cross the road and turn left onto Chemin des Écoliers, which runs parallel to the road.

(6) In front of the school complex, turn right. Follow the car park to the left, walking alongside it parallel to the road, and continue along the path which veers left to pass in front of Val-Saint-Père Town Hall. At the corner of the cemetery surrounding the church, turn right towards Les Cognardières until you reach the D456.

(7) Turn left and take thefirst road on the right towards Les Fosses. Follow the path as it bends to the left, ignoring a path on the right. At a hairpin bend, turn right onto the footpath which leads onto the road through Bouillé. Continue straight ahead to reach Les Herbus.

(8) Here, theGR® 22 joins theGR® 223, which comes in from the right. Turn left. It’s quite a surprise to walk alongside an aerodrome whose runways are situated in the salt marshes and can therefore be submerged at spring tides. Follow this small coastal road, keeping the salt marshes and the River Sélune on your right. As soon as possible, leave the verge to enter the salt marshes and walk along the bank of the River Sélune. The coastal road bends to the left (the route taken on the way there). Carry on straight ahead.

(3) Cross the footbridge over the Ruisseau du Moulinet again and continue through the salt marshes, leaving them briefly to follow the reverse route of the outward journey.

(1) At the end of the reed beds, when a road appears ahead, turn left. At the crossroads, keep right and follow the road as it bends to the left. Cross the level crossing to return to the car park (S/E).

A very easy and pleasant circular route, made up of small roads and paths. A beautiful view of Mont Saint-Michel on the way back

A pleasant hike, although it should be noted that there are many paved sections from the start to point 7. These are country roads, but there is still regular traffic. However, this allows you to make a loop, and the paved sections alternate with dirt paths.
It is from point 7 and especially point 8 that the appeal of this hike really comes into its own, with a magnificent view in the distance of Mont Saint Michel and its sheep, and a very local route through the polders.
This part alone is worth the trip!
NB: If you do the walk in reverse, you will see Mont Saint Michel appear gradually, whereas in the opposite direction, you end up with your back to it. However, if you do it in reverse, you end with the least interesting part. It's up to you to decide whether you prefer the best at the beginning or at the end.
