Around Paulhiet

This easy little loop allows you to discover the charming hamlet of Paulhiet. The route, with gentle slopes (both uphill and downhill), mainly follows wide paths and a few small, quiet roads. The route is mostly shaded, winding its way through woodland and hills. It is best to do this walk when the lavender is in bloom, as there are many lavender fields around Paulhiet.

Description of the walk

To reach the car park at the start, in front of the cemetery above La Paillette-Montjoux, take the D130, Route de Dieulefit.

(S/E) Opposite the cemetery, turn left downhill onto Chemin du Château (private property). In front of the castle, make a short detour to the left until you reach the D130, where you will find an information panel about the history of the castle (15th-17th centuries). Return to the front of the castle and follow the path marked in yellow below the castle, which runs along the enclosure in the undergrowth and then along the Ravin de la Combette. At the fork, continue climbing to the left.

(1) When you come out under the signpost "Le Devès 520m", climb up to the right on the small tarmac road (Chemin du Devès) towards Relautier. The road passes under a horse training ground. Leave the road at the bend and continue left onto Chemin de la Marmantane. Follow the electric fence around a field where horses usually graze.

(2) At the signpost for "Relautier 520m", continue straight ahead towards "L'Avalanche". The path descends and becomes very stony. Stay on this wide path until you come to a small tarmac road.

(3) At the signpost "L'Avalanche 485m", turn right onto the paved road towards Fabras. Continue straight ahead on this small road, which further on becomes a track.

(4) At the signpost for "Fabras 520m", in front of some rocks, under a large oak tree, continue right towards Paulhiet. Admire the view of the Lance mountain and the Rocher Garaux. The wide path lined with lavender fields offers an unobstructed view of the hamlet and the mountains of the Baronnies Provençales.

(5) At the signpost for "Paulhiet 575m", you can turn right and return to discover the pretty hamlet nestled among chestnut and walnut trees. Otherwise, head towards Vesc. Stay on the Chemin de Vesc à Fabras, which passes between fenced truffle fields, turn right (yellow and VTT10 signs), follow the lavender fields before climbing gently through the woods.

(6) At the T-junction, turn left (yellow and VTT10 signs). Follow a wood bordered by an electric fence until you reach a large crossroads with several paths.

(7) Turn right onto the path that goes around the electric fence (yellow cross). Continue along this path, which further on joins a track that is closed to non-residents. Stay on this main track, which descends and is lined with dense vegetation of ferns and heather (the other crossroads are private and blocked by chains or cables).

(8) At the crossroads, continue straight ahead. The slope becomes steeper on the stony, grassy track, which winds its way downhill. At the bottom of this track, cross a ford before joining a small tarmac road.

(9) Turn left and follow this road until you reach the Route de Dieulefit (D130). Turn right, then right again towards the cemetery, and you will return to the car park (S/E).

A lovely walk. We did it with our disabled daughter. She was very brave, but it must be said that the route is difficult due to the many large stones that litter much of the path. The hamlet of Paulhiet is worth a visit. Thank you to the author.
