Description of the walk

Park in the car park by Lake Bellegarde.

(S/E) With your back to the lake, turn right onto Chemin du Troubadour and follow the stream on your right. Continue straight ahead until you reach the junction with the road leading to the quarry.

(1) Continue straight ahead on the dirt track, following the yellowPR® markings. Take a first turn left then right, and you will come to a crossroads facing a group of lakes.

(2) Cross Chemin de Générac, making a short first turn left then right, walk along the lake and continue straight ahead. At the power lines, temporarily leave the marked trail and take the path opposite.

(3) Turn slightly left then right to leave the fence on your right and rejoin the yellowPR® markings. Pass under the power lines again and turn sharply left to take the path that descends steeply and joins the RD 38.

(4) Carefully cross the departmental road and continue straight ahead to the bridge over the canal. Before reaching the bridge, turn left and follow the canal for 3.5 km to the port of Bellegarde.

(5) Turn left at the roundabout. Cross the roundabout on the left with great caution, then turn left onto Rue Jean Monnet to enter Bellegarde. Continue along Rue d'Arles.

(6) Go around the roundabout on the left and stay on Rue d'Arles until the junction with Rue de la République.

(7) Turn left. At the end of the street, turn slightly left and then immediately right to cross the square and go up the stairs. Once at the top, continue straight ahead up Rue Chanzy. Continue along the path to the castle ruins and the viewpoint.

(8) Continue along Chemin de la Tour until you reach the roundabout.

(9) Take the first exit on the right and go down Chemin du Coste Canet.

(10) At the bottom of the hill, turn left onto Chemin du Troubadour and head to the lake car park (S/E).

The return journey follows a canal. It’s a cycle path that has recently been resurfaced. The smell is strong and spoils the experience. It’s a shame that this type of surfacing was chosen. Nevertheless, it remains a pleasant family outing.

Nice walk, but the path along the canal has been paved, so it's tarmac all the way to the end of the hike. And these 3.5 km of canal are straight, so it feels very long. It's a shame because otherwise the scenery is varied.

An interesting walk, we were even sheltered from the mistral wind by the sea walls and vegetation.

A lovely route that takes you through the town and the surrounding countryside, with a beautiful view at the end of the route from the castle ruins. The straight stretch along the canal is in full sun even in the morning, but you can stay in the shade at various points by taking the parallel path.

An easy and very pleasant route. Ideal for springtime. We admired the water lilies along the Rhône canal in Sète and saw a barge. Make sure you bring enough water, as there are no water sources along the route.

A pleasant walk, but best avoided in hot weather. The conveyor belt carrying stones from the quarry is worth seeing in itself! We extended our walk by continuing on to the ponds, passing between them and admiring a colony of very active gulls on the right-hand pond, which is fenced off. We then rejoined the planned route by turning left towards Sautebraut and then right again towards Mas Chaudsoleil, which allowed us to admire the apple orchards in bloom. And finally, we had a moment of reverie among the buttercups by the canal, waiting for a barge to pass by slowly and peacefully.
