Description of the walk

To get to the starting point, go to the Parking du Centre car parkat 8 Rue Emile Fassin, Arles. This is a pay car park but aconvenient starting point, just a stone's throw from the amphitheatre. It's the ideal place to begin your circular tour without any detours.

(S/E) Leave the car park towards the city centre. You will arrive at Boulevard des Lices, where you should turn left. Pass in front of the Chapelle de la Charité and then, at the traffic lights near the Charles de Gaulle Memorial, cross Boulevard des Lices and continue straight on Rue Jean Jaurès. Once you reach Place de la République, cross it, passing in front of the former post office, the entrance to the Cloître Saint-Trophime and Saint-Trophime Cathedral. After the cathedral, turn right and continue along the paved slanting street until you reach the Théâtre Antique.

(1) After visiting the Théâtre Antique, continue along the Paved Slanting Street until you reach the Arènes d'Arles. Once you have finished your visit, go around the monument on the right towards the Église Notre-Dame-de-la-Major. Then, go to the left of the church to enjoy a panoramic view of the city of Arles.

(2) Retrace your steps and turn right down the small Rue Ernest Renan. Go around the amphitheatre on the right on the Parvis des Arenoises. At the no entry sign, continue right on the Ront-Point des Arènes then turn right onto Rue des Arènes (steps). Walk past the Galerie Arena and turn right after the solicitors' office. In Rue de Vernon, walk past the Lee Ufan Art Museum and then, in front of the optician's, make a first turn right then left to continue along Rue Réattu. Pass in front of the Salle de concert Jean et Pons Dedieu and turn left at the end of the street. In Rue du Grand Prieur, pass in front of the Commanderie Sainte-Luce (museum) and continue to the Thermes de Constantin.

(3) Go around the baths via Rue du Grand Prieuré, then turn left onto Rue Truchet, which you'll recognise by the barrier. At the end of this street, turn right and continue to the Église des Frères Prêcheurs, where you will find Les Rencontres d'Arles. Once you have finished your visit, follow Rue du Dr. Fanton, which continues into Rue du Séminaire, where you will see the bell tower of the Chapelle Méjan. At the end of Rue du Séminaire, turn right. You will arrive in front of the Méjan, a former church converted into a cultural centre. With your back to the Méjan, cross Quai Marx Dormoy to reach the banks of the Rhône.

(4) Walk along the quays with the Rhône on your right, pass under the Pont de Trinquetaille bridge, then turn left into Rue du Bac, which is a one-way street. At the fork, in front of the façade of the former Giraud mansion, continue left into Rue Élie Giraud. At the marker, first turn right then left to continue along Rue Jouvene and reach the small Place Honoré Clair. Continue to the right to cross the square, turn left into Rue Barremes, then right into Rue Frédéric Mistral, and finally left into Rue Balze. You will arrive in front of the town hall, which houses the Cryptoportiques d'Arles.

(5) Go through the town hall door and cross the lobby. You will arrive at Place de la République, in front of the fountain and obelisk from the Roman circus. Cross the square and turn right onto Rue de la République. In front of the Arlaten Museum, turn left onto Rue du Président Wilson. Cross the square, then turn left onto Rue de la Rotonde. After the Reformed Church of the Pays d'Arles, turn right onto Rue Jean Jaurès. Walk down to Boulevard des Lices, which you should cross carefully. Continue to the left to find the car park (S/E) just after the municipal police station.
