Description of the walk

Park in the car park above the town hall.

N.B. Some paths on the ground are not shown on the IGN map, and vice versa, between points 1 and 3. Furthermore, on this section, the trail infrastructure and yellow markings are inadequate. Please follow the instructions carefully.

(S/E) From the car park, take the road above and follow it all the way. At the next junction, turn left onto Rue de l’Église. Walk past a wash house and the church situated above it, and continue along the main road for a few metres before leaving it to take the path on the left. Further on, walk past a barn, go through a gate and continue along the path until you reach a junction sign.

(1) Go straight on to see the ruins of the Église du Pech, then turn back towards the sign.

(1) Navigation gets a bit tricky here as there are no signposts or clear markings. Head due north and, a few metres further on, join a small path which you’ll follow, crossing a fence a little further on.

(2) Keep an eye out for the small round orange markings on the trees and, at this exact spot, turn right towards the next stage.

(3) At an orange circle on a tree, turn right and stay on the marked path. Further on, a path marked in yellow (not shown on the IGN map) branches off to the left. Ignore this to stay on the main path and you’ll finally come to a section where the signposting and path markings are in order. You’ll reach a junction.

(4) Take the track on the left, which leads you to another junction in less than a kilometre.

(5) Follow the yellow-marked route to the left and emerge at the Col de la Clause, where you rejoin theGR®7Aand the Chemin Vauban.

(6) At the hairpin bend in the track, head down to the left. Further on, pass the hamlet of Le Menier (with an information board about old mines) and reach a junction of paths.

(7) At this point:
- you have the option to shorten your walk and head directly to Fontanès by taking the left-hand route.
- otherwise (route choice), stay on theGR®7Auntil you leave it where a path leads downhill to the left.

(8) Here too, there is a discrepancy between the path and the map. The best way to avoid getting lost is to follow the wires on the electricity pylons, which will guide you along the route. Yellow markings appear on this track where these pylons are located.

Follow the path and pass an information board about Usson Castle, which you can see in the distance. Further on, another information board tells you about the old Dournes Castle before you go through the tunnel of the same name.

Go through the first gate, then another, before finishing this pleasant heritage and cultural walk by returning to Fontanès-de-Sault (S/E).

First of all, this walk is suitable for experienced walkers who have a good sense of direction and a GPS track on their smartphone. Let me explain: sections 1 to 4, with no signposting, are fine; but on top of that, felled trees, fallen trees and prunings – all of it has been left on the paths. The paths are invisible for tens of metres on several occasions, and progress is difficult. Furthermore, the positioning of waypoints 3 and 8 is a bit haphazard. The orange marker at waypoint 3 is invisible. That said, the start and end of the walk are very pleasant (viewpoints, paths, etc.).

I did the route, starting from the Col de la Clause and returning via the church
To get up to Dournes Castle, turn left as you come out of the tunnel and make your way through the boxwood bushes
Make sure you have a GPS with you for about 500 metres after the church ruins
