Around Ave-et-Auffe

An easy hike accessible via the E411 motorway. Just 5 km from the Caves of Han-sur-Lesse, come and discover the charming village of Ave-et-Auffe, the village of my childhood. Formed by a merger in 1820, it stretches on either side of the Ry d’Ave, on the border with the province of Luxembourg but still within the province of Namur. Beautiful views over the Famenne and the foothills of the Ardennes. Breeding of Ardennes horses and alpacas. In March and April, daffodils, flowerbeds and hawthorns will delight you.

Description of the walk

Park near Saint-Michel Church.
Yellow Diamond markings.

(S/E) Take Rue de Nauby, towards Lessive and Éprave, for about 300 m.

(1) Turn left onto the uphill Rue du Roptay. Pass the campsite of the same name and continue to follow the markings.

(2) At the exit of the campsite, turn right onto a small, steep path: follow the Yellow Diamonds. After a sharp left-hand bend, there is a clearing with views of the foothills of the Ardennes. A wide right-hand bend leads to the summit (alt. 283 m). A few metres further on, on the descent, there are views of the Famenne and the Royal Castle of Ciergnon.

(3) Follow the signposting to the right. Enjoy a pleasant walk across the wooded plateau. A few metres before the road, there are views of the former Lessive telecommunications station.

(4) Turn right onto the tarmac road, ignoring the first path on the right. At the next junction, continue straight on up Rue du Borquet. Ignore the next crossroads and carry on straight ahead.

(5) Turn left onto Rue Tienne des Solins. Stay on the main road and take Rue du Long Tienne. Pass a large livestock farm on your left.

(6) At the crossroads, keep right as you go uphill, then continue right onto the plateau, taking in the scenery.

(7) When you reach a detached house, take a path on the left. At the road, turn right towards the hamlet of Auffe. Cross the N86 with care, then pass the Chapelle Saint-Lambert.

(8) At the bottom of the descent, before the Ry d’Ave bridge, turn right onto Rue du Pachy Saint-Lambert. At the end of the street, turn left onto the stony path that crosses over the Ry d’Ave. Continue along the edge of the forest, ignoring the paths coming from the left. You’ll reach a crossroads after a large tree on the right (cross).

(9) Turn left and walk for 400 m, then turn right onto Rue du Saut de la Brebis and head back to the village.

(10) Cross the N86 with care and turn right to return to the starting point at Saint-Michel Church (S/E).

A very pleasant, quiet and secluded walk, with no real tourist attractions, but with lovely views of the surrounding area. Even on a lovely weekend’s day, we hardly saw anyone. A small correction to the description: the rest area with tables and a canopy is not at point 2, but just before point 4. As we approached point 3, we came across a clearing full of wild strawberries.

A lovely walk, even in the gloomy, grey weather of 15 November. A varied route with sweeping views of the distant landscape. One to do again in the summer.
