In the Vilaine region between Laillé and Bourg-des-Comptes

This is a beautiful circular that partly follows theGR®39along charming paths. The return journey is along the towpath, going up the Vilaine.
This path takes you through beautiful landscapes, typical villages, charming residences and locks, and ends up running alongside this river, which is so poorly named.

Description of the walk

The walk starts on the banks of the Vilaine, in the car park on the left, at the exit of the bridge on the road between Laillé and Guichen.

(S/E) From the car park, go up the road, turn right, cross the bridge and continue towards Laillé. Ignore the first road on the right. Continue to the second road, also on the right.

(1) Take the road on the right and enter the hamlet (Les Vallées). Follow the red and white markings ofthe GR®39. Turn right at the first road and you will soon reach a crossroads.

(2) Take the small path on the left and continue on the GR®. This path turns 90° to the right and, after about 15 minutes' walk, leads to a small road. Take it to the left for about 100 metres.

(3) Leave the road and follow the wide path on the right (GR® and two other trails). Continue on the GR®. Go around a lake and turn right onto a road near a place called La Marcillais.

(4) Just before a three-way junction, theGR® turns left onto the small road, towards a riding centre. The road quickly becomes a path. When you reach another road, turn left and continue straight ahead. After passing a pond (on the left), the path runs alongside the Château de la Réauté and reaches a fork.

(5) Turn right (GR®) onto the path that climbs into the woods. First turn left, then right at a place called La Forge to head towards La Mare. At the entrance to the hamlet, follow theGR® which turns right onto a wide path and descends towards the Vilaine.

(6) Continue straight ahead, crossing the bridge over a road (D38). Continue along the wide path, which turns into a small road and leads to another road at the entrance to Bourg-des-Comptes.

(7) Leave theGR® and turn left onto Rue de la Gare. Continue to thethird street on the right, Rue de la Visnonia. Continue along this street and take the first left, Rue des Aulnes. In the sharp bend, turn left onto Passage du Gué. At the end of this street, you will arrive at the village of La Courbe. Turn right and then immediately left, until you reach the banks of the Vilaine. You can picnic on the island opposite.

(8) Turn around, pass to the left of the bar-restaurant and continue along the small road (GR® trail). Continue past the campsite. At the end of the road, leave theGR® trail, turn left and cross the Pont de Glanret bridge over the Vilaine river.

(9) In the small village after the bridge, take the small street on the left that leads down to the towpath. Take the towpath on the left and stay on it. Just before the bridge, you will see the car park on the left

(S/E). Return to the car park. End of the walk.

Notes

There are no major difficulties, but the terrain is quite hilly, with two or three slopes. There are no real steep climbs, but there are long ascents. The walk may seem long for people who are not used to this distance. However, the beauty of the landscape will make you forget these minor concerns.
Bring water and some snacks.
Good walking shoes are recommended.
There are many services and shops in Bourg-des-Comptes (La Courbe).

Please note
Due to significant landslides along the towpath, access is prohibited and it is not possible to complete the Bourg-des-Comptes circular. As work has not yet begun, we are still unable to walk on part of the towpath, so I have decided to modify this route, but to keep the visit to the village of La Courbe, which is so pleasant and convenient.

Worth a visit

Before returning via the towpath, this hike takes you to the protected natural site of La Courbe in Bourg-des-Comptes. Enjoy this magnificent place where everything has been designed to welcome visitors. Among other things, you will find picnic tables, a bar-restaurant and public toilets.
You can also visit the nearby village.

Two-thirds of the hike was very hilly and muddy that day. However, the return to the starting point along the banks of the Vilaine was completely flat.

A very nice route divided into two very interesting halves due to their diversity.
The "return" along the towpath is easy going and allows you to recover from the climbs in the first half.
I did it in the sunshine, surrounded by flowers, and it was great.

modification: in the description in point 6, the GR 39 does not turn right (as written) but continues straight ahead to a place called La Courbe, where it takes the footbridge, passes the lock and turns left onto the towpath towards Redon. This is the current route on the ground as of 27 August 2023.

Hello
Thank you for your information. Perhaps the passage is blocked due to construction work. I will find out whether this obstruction is temporary or permanent.

Currently, the return route is blocked on the towpath after Bourg des Comptes. It is impossible to pass, so you must immediately take the bridge over the Vilaine to find the towpath free for the return journey.

Less enthusiastic than my predecessors: the first two thirds are a bit boring, apart from some beautiful rolling landscapes. The stop on the banks of the Vilaine is welcome: restaurant, toilets, picnic...
Things start to get interesting once you cross the Vilaine, but the towpath is under construction just after the crossing, forcing you to take a detour along the road to reach Guichen Bourg des Comptes station, where you can rejoin the towpath below.

Thanks for the comment. It's not every day you see a wild boar swimming away!!! Surprising.

Well, a very pleasant parish-specific to Brittany walk. Beautiful sunken paths with lovely moss. Manor houses. We saw a wild boar swimming across the Vilaine river!

Thank you, this hike lived up to its promise. It was exactly as described and commented on, so we had a very pleasant day. It's true that arriving at the lock is a very pleasant surprise: we set off at 10am and had a picnic on a bench in the sunshine by the water at around 12.15pm. On colder days, you could eat at the little workers' restaurant right next door or have a hot drink... (Total: 5½ hours, including about 1½ hours of various breaks)

A lovely route, the upper part is very interesting due to its diverse landscapes and the return trip along the towpath is relaxing... picnic by the dam and a little nap on a spring day!

A beautiful 5-hour hike, including breaks.
Pleasant elevation gain in the countryside on the heights of La Vilaine on the way there, with a quick return via the towpath.
No major difficulties.
Suitable for walkers with good footwear as some paths can be muddy at this time of year.

Did this afternoon in glorious sunshine. Very well marked and very pleasant route, especially the short stop at Bourg-des-Comptes before following the Vilaine to the car park. Thank you for this walk!

a very beautiful walk, with a good balance between sunken paths and towpaths, and very little road.
I recommend it
