North of Villegouge

A slightly undulating route through the vineyards, with a few copses and quiet roads with sufficiently accessible verges.

Description of the walk

Start from the car park by the church and cemetery.

(S/E) Walk down the path alongside the cemetery and, at the bottom, turn left onto the D128, Route des Genévirers.

(1) Once you’ve left the woods and passed the second house, take the path on your left. Walk alongside the first copse, cross the next one and, at the exit, continue straight ahead, veering slightly to the left as you cross the road, then walk alongside the vineyards.

(2) Before reaching the farm, turn right to join the road, then left to pass in front of the farm. About fifty metres further on, turn right towards the hamlet of Robert.

(3) When you reach the hamlet, turn left, walk along the edge of the woods and, at the end, turn right then left towards the copse. Continue straight ahead.

(4) At the corner of the copse, walk along its right-hand side then veer slightly left to join the D138 in front of the hamlet of Maumie.

(5) Turn left onto the road and, 200m further on, right onto the first path. Join the road and continue straight ahead to the next T-junction.

(6) Cross the road and take the path opposite towards La Barge. Keep left at the Y-junction, then follow the road as it curves left towards the hamlet of La Barge and further on reaches a T-junction.

(7) Turn left onto this road, ignoring the two turnings on the right and then the one on the left.

(8) Just before reaching Saliens, turn left along a hedge towards the hamlet of Chiquet and join the Pavol road.

(9) Continue to the right and, 100m further on, follow the Chemin des Perdrix to the left until you reach the road.

(10) At the junction with the D128, continue left, go downhill to the first crossroads where you turn right onto the Chemin de Labattut. At the end of the road, continue along the path which crosses several meadows and climbs up to the centre of Villegouge behind the schools. Follow Rue des Écoles, cross Rue Principale and head towards the car park by the church and cemetery (S/E).

Notes

Important: this route takes you off the beaten track. All the landmarks mentioned in the description (place names, castle names, as well as high-voltage power lines, bridges, etc.) are shown on the corresponding IGN 1:25,000 map but are not always included on the smaller-scale map.
It is strongly recommended that you either obtain the map in question or use the app on a smartphone, which will also allow you to be geolocated at all times, enabling you to track your movements accurately.
The route may cross or follow other marked trails. It is tempting to follow the markings! Unless otherwise specified, do not stray from the route.
Using walking poles can prove very useful and reassuring; as well as providing stability, they help distribute the strain.

A pleasant walk through vineyards, farmland and small woods.
At a place called Peyreton, you can see an old hand-pumped fountain on the right-hand side of the small road. u Afterwards, a pond is visible on the right-hand side of the road k
After leaving the road to Villegouge (past the hamlet of La Maumie), the path joins the small road known as the Chemin de Queynac La Fougère. Here, a detour of about a hundred metres there and back allows you to admire the ruins of Queynac Church, which was a former Templar commandery. It is situated amidst the vineyards, which gives it a certain charm.
After the hamlet known as La Barge, you will see a stately home known as La Grange.^
Shortly afterwards, the road passes by a pond on the right-hand side.
There are several notable buildings to see in Villegouge, in addition to Saint Pierre Church

Hello

For several years now, once a year, we have been walking the circular route known as “Au Nord de Villegouge” in Gironde.
With my walking club, yesterday (12/04/2022) we had planned this walk.
Between point 4 and point 5, which happens to be a dirt track, we saw a large grey pick-up truck coming towards us at high speed, and several of us waved at him to slow down.
The driver stopped by locking the wheels of his vehicle and pointed out to us that he was the person who maintained the track and that it was thanks to him that we were able to pass through there.
There were about twenty of us walkers, all keen walkers and respectful of the environment and safety.
The driver – not to say the reckless driver – set off again, making the wheels spin, and narrowly missed the people at the back of the group.
I wanted to bring this unacceptable behaviour to your attention and ask whether you have received any similar reports in the past.
Thank you for your reply, and I wish you a good day.
Alain

A pleasant walk. No particular difficulties.
The blue route marker on the app makes it easy to follow the route, so you can quickly see if you’ve missed a path – provided, of course, that you check your smartphone often enough!

Hello,
A pleasant walk through vineyards, hamlets and various meadows. Paths and small roads. Take care in very wet weather, as the ground is mostly clayey and therefore very slippery (mud). Make sure you wear suitable footwear.
No major problems with navigation, but it’s true that between points 3 and 4, with few landmarks (the vineyards are of little help here and the zigzag paths following the farm tracks aren’t always easy to spot), we opted for the ‘easy’ solution, which involves following the yellow/green markings leading to the south-west of Maunie. You then simply need to retrace your steps a little along the road and take the path leading to marker 6 (the ruins of Queynac church). The length of the walk is hardly affected by this.
Thanks for this route. Best regards.
Hervé

A lovely walk, mostly along paths, under the November sun. We had a bit of trouble following the map and directions (we didn’t have a GPS), but we managed it!
At the end of (1), “follow the vineyards”: there aren’t any left! They’ve been pulled up and the land ploughed… but perhaps they’ll be replanted in two or three years’ time?
Between (3) and (4), it’s not obvious where to go “right then left towards the copse”: the copse in question isn’t visible yet, it seems to me, especially as there are others further to the right...
From (8) onwards, there are green markings confirming the route.
Thank you for this lovely route – I really enjoyed the “spice” of it!
